politically independent
editI don't understand what this means: It is one of four politically independent villages in the greater Vancouver area. What defines a "politically independent village"? --Ds13 04:25, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- well then, I will tell you, it means it has it's own city council. As opposed to let's say the area of Aldergrove, which is not politically independent because it does not have it's own city council, it is under the governance of the township of langley. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 154.5.132.51 (talk • contribs).
- Thanks for responding, but I don't think you fully defined what I was asking about. Your definition of "politically independent village" would also fit Port Moody, Burnaby, Vancouver, etc. So is there a population size requirement to be labelled a village? Or a legal status? Or is this a subjective term?
- I should add that the "village" article here is currently a bit of an uncited/unverifiable work in progress, and without any Canadian specifics, so it doesn't help much. --Ds13 05:55, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
See List of communities in British Columbia. BC municipalities are incorporated as:
- a village, if the population is not greater than 2 500
- a town, if the population is greater than 2 500 but not greater than 5 000
- a city, if the population is greater than 5 000 (excepting Greenwood, which retained "city" status after the depopulation)
- a district municipality if the area to be incorporated is greater than 800 hectares and has an average population density of less than 5 persons per hectare.[1].
I'm going to post this in the various category pages too. -- TheMightyQuill 08:16, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
- Nice sleuthing. Thanks! --Ds13 19:29, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
- And it turns out Bowen Island is not a village. They're a dying breed in Greater Vancouver. --Ds13 19:37, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
why is a citation needed to prove there is a hydro dam at buntzen lake? It is disputed or something?
- It's for the ferry that is mentioned. I for one am certainly not aware of any ferry up there. GeeCee 07:01, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
Elevation
editQuestion? I have a question, when it mentions elevation 591 feet what does that even measure? Does that refer to the elevation of the village hall? Or some other point?
I feel that maybe elevation should be a range between the highest and lowest points. Besides in an area that's all hills and mountains, listing the elevation of a city is kinda difficult since it changes greatly depending where you go.TotallyTempo (talk) 18:48, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
- It is the elevation at the administrative centre indeed (so are the coordinates). The infobox is set up to accept one value only, and I figure it's enough to give an idea. --Qyd (talk) 21:42, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
Proposal to rename page
edit- The following is a closed discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
Proposed rename: Anmore, British Columbia → Anmore Anmore currently redirects to Anmore, British Columbia. There is no Anmore (disambiguation) page; other uses of Anmore in page names are either secondary to the community or used in composite names. As the place name is evidently unique and primary, it is proposed to simplify the page name per WP:CANSTYLE and WP:PRIMARYUSAGE. Dl2000 (talk) 03:20, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
- But there's an Anmore, West Virginia at least as well (google - so small I guess is why it doesn't hve much of a webpresence, but it's there for sure), though US guidelines granted would have the comma-format if that article were to come into existence; it's a decidedly Celtic-sounding name but I haven't located one in Scotland, maybe it's Irish or Anglo-Celtic ("The Moor/heath"); the BCGNIS unique-name origin only has to do with the creek; residents had a bias for a familiar-sounding name; I suspect it's a specific association that will turn up in the UK as the namesake....Skookum1 (talk) 05:30, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
- oh, OK, it's Anmoore, West Virginia....still think it's gonna turn up in the Auld Sod somewhere.....Skookum1 (talk) 05:33, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
- WP:CANSTYLE does require that for a settlement of this size to be at the plain title, it must be a unique place name. Therefore, I will hold off expressing any comments on this one until we ascertain that there isn't another settlement named Anmore that could equally qualify for the plain title. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 16:08, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
- Support. I've done a few searches, and I can find no settlements named Anmore elsewhere in the world. I did even more specific searches in the U.S., U.K. and Ireland, and only came up with Anmore-Hampshire (mentioned below by Mindmatrix) and an Anmore Road in Waterlooville - since neither of these would qualify for the plain title as per WP:DAB, I am satisfied that this article can be moved as proposed. I am also comforted by the origins of the community's name as set out in the article ("Anmore got its name from a local homesteader, F.J. Lancaster, who combined the names of his wife (Annie) and his daughter (Leonore) to make 'Annore'"), which reinforces the fact that the Canadian settlement wasn't named after one in Europe (as is so often the case). - Support per nom. - DigitalC (talk) 07:28, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
- Support; an internet search suggests that, despite restricting a query to non-BC occurrences of "Anmore", results are still strongly associated with this village. However, per Skookum1's finding, a hatnote should point to Anmoore, West Virginia. Also per Skookum1's findings, I'd prefer delaying a move until we can ascertain that no community with this name exists elsewhere. So far, I've found an Anmore-Hampshire, which doesn't qualify for the plain title. Mindmatrix 14:36, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
- Comment Concur with the hatnote to Anmoore, WV as a guide from potential misspelling. A reciprocal hatnote on the Anmoore, WV article would also be appropriate, since Anmoore redirects there. Also Anmore, BC has added visibility beyond its size due to its location within Metro Vancouver. Dl2000 (talk) 22:56, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

A note regarding anmorons
editI put a list of notable Anmorons, and added one guy who I thought was notable. I think some people (not from Anmore) may disagree with me on the usage of Anmoron. I am here to preemptively defend its usage. Anmoron may sound like a dumb name (probably because it mostly consists of "Moron" but this is what Anmore residents will often refer to themselves as. I base this on 18 years of living in the community, and attending many community functions. Also, there doesn"t seem to be a good substitute for the name. Anmorian is scarcely better, and never used, and Anmorer is just plain dumb. I maintain that the most natural and oft colloquially used name for a resident of Anmore is in fact Anmoron. I also think that this is a debate for residents and former residents of Anmore. I really do not see the the use for residents of other municipalities who have no connections to Anmore weighing in on this debate. Our community, our name. TotallyTempo (talk) 03:54, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
- Sooooo because you live in a place means you get to tell the rest of the Wikipedia world what people should be called? Doesn't work that way. Wikipedia is ruled by legitimate references, and the only one I can find is a Facebook page. Oh well, simple solution anyway... most community articles use "Notable residents".
