Anonymous user User:24.91.174.93 contributed text now at Alison Moyet/temp, which is copyrighted. Anon claims to be the copyright holder and representative of http://www.alisonmoyet.com/ . Added some legal threats here and here. See also User talk:24.91.174.93 -- Chris 73 Talk 07:52, Jan 1, 2005 (UTC)

Merged the two articles. Mainly created a discography and copied some text, cutting out the advertisements. Deleted Alison Moyet/temp, but the text can still be found for example here -- Chris 73 Talk 02:02, Jan 2, 2005 (UTC)

Chris, and anonymous contributor, thanks for your work. I hope that all will feel free to edit the text to correct factual inaccuracies.

One thing I remember about Alison is how, I think in 1987, she had a UK single "Loveletters Straight from your Heart" that was number 65 in the BBC annual list for that year [1]. My son used to sing it, though he could barely speak at the time. "ikissername" may well have been his first words. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 14:52, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Clean up tag

edit

I added a clean up tag as the page looks a bit messy at the moment, also the chronology is all over the place and needs to be sorted out quercus robur 10:25, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)

discography tables

edit

arranged albums and singles, although i only have UK chart placings for songs that reached Top 40.... if anyone has chart placings for non-top-40 singles, please add the numbers!  :-) -- eo 06:25, 23 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Photos

edit

I just added a couple of photos (album covers) to the page, as per the tag on this page, and some 'helpful' new changes patroller has just reverted my changes.

I would be very grateful if you could discuss changes on here or on my userpage rather than reverting them unilaterally. Thanks. kieron 11:20, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Incidentally, I don't have any promo photos of Alison, only the album covers. Does anyone have a promo photo we can put in the initial paragraph? Thanks kieron 11:30, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

This article is one of thousands on Wikipedia that have a link to YouTube in it. Based on the External links policy, most of these should probably be removed. I'm putting this message here, on this talk page, to request the regular editors take a look at the link and make sure it doesn't violate policy. In short: 1. 99% of the time YouTube should not be used as a source. 2. We must not link to material that violates someones copyright. If you are not sure if the link on this article should be removed, feel free to ask me on my talk page and I'll review it personally. Thanks. ---J.S (t|c) 04:23, 8 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Alison Moyet - Hometime.jpg

edit

Image:Alison Moyet - Hometime.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 18:51, 31 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Died" in Background Info ?

edit

I notice that the "Background Info" now shows "Died 17 Oct 2010, Bangor, Ireland". I can't find confirmation on this anywhere including her official site. And there is no mention of this anywhere else in the article. This looks like an error, but I'll leave the change to someone who knows definitely. 75.0.180.170 (talk) 00:00, 18 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sales figures

edit

Sales of 800,000 for UK singles is a massive underestimation. Her 6 Top 10 singles come to about 1.5 million sales. That Ole Devil and All Cried Out both sold around 300,000 copies; Is This Love and Love Letters both sold 250,000 , and Weak and Love Resurrection both sold almost 200,000 each. I'd imagine Invisible sold a few over the Christmas period. Reckon she's on about 1.7 million sales total. rpj — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rpjonesuk (talkcontribs) 14:07, 7 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. Presumably they're talking about certified sales - which is basically her four silver discs added up to 800,000. In fact, silver certifications were for 250,000 pre 1989, so it would add up to one million for these alone. I'll amend the text accordingly, but can't put an exact figure unless we have a source.--Tuzapicabit (talk) 14:13, 19 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Secondary Education?

edit

I notice a gap in account of her schooling, saying she attended Markham Wood Junior School. Next sentence begins "After leaving school at 16.." without mention of where she attended after junior school level. Raises question as to whether secondary schooling was in state school or private, and where she was schooled, locally or away from family home? Worth looking to fill that gap, those editors with access to information about that stage of her schooling.Cloptonson (talk) 19:40, 2 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Stonewall letter

edit

I've edited this for greater clarity. The letter she signed was not attacking Stonewall for "supporting trans rights" as an earlier version had it, but for a failure to act against bullies trying to silence gender criticism. You could link to the letter itself, but I've stayed with a reputable newspaper. 95.145.211.32 (talk) 22:47, 4 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi just seeing your post now. The link you used is an opinion piece. Opinion pieces are generally not considered reliable sources. The Reuters article I found was the only non-opinion piece I saw on this letter from a mainstream news source and it see the letter as being over trans rights. Rab V (talk) 02:15, 5 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

That's not an opinion article. That's a news article by Lucy Bannerman, who writes news, not opinion. It was in the news section of the paper. If we disagree on what's news and what's opinion, then let's link to the letter itself (as I will do now). Please don't politicise this Wikipedia entry. 95.145.211.32 (talk) 19:00, 5 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and now I see it has been reverted as "vandalism". Wow, that's pretty scary. Almost as if Alison Moyet has a point about free speech and censorship? 95.145.211.32 (talk) 19:27, 5 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

The mention doesn’t even make sense grammatically. Everything Moyet has ever said or done is not notable. Actor James Dreyfus who signed that same letter has made such issues a staple of his personal life yet there is no mention on his page. Moyet recanted her support for it and has shared her views on myriad topics. We can’t and shouldn’t be listing them all. Transgender issues haven’t been a notable concern of hers throughout her career. Partyclams (talk) 19:07, 7 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

^^^ Agreed. It's barely relevant. 95.145.211.32 (talk) 19:21, 7 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Not a very good photograph

edit

I think it is a pretty poor photograph. It would be better if it was a more natural photograph 86.139.194.37 (talk) 20:41, 19 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Name

edit

Is there any confirmation, that her legal name is Ballard? The first sentence claims so, but there is no mention in the article afterwards, and she is always known as Alison Moyet. Pibwl ←« 08:46, 22 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

See article:
"Geneviève Alison Jane Ballard MBE (née Moyet /ˈmɔɪ.eɪ/ MOY-ay; born 18 June 1961)..."
"...her current husband David Ballard."
After marrying David Ballard her family name changed to Ballard.
Hinnerk R (talk) 12:16, 22 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Again: I am asking if there is any confirmation for this sentence, apart from the fact, that somebody wrote such header? Pibwl ←« 09:45, 19 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Date of birth/age

edit

One never asks a lady her age, but I found a possible source on the Wayback Machine. May I add it, or is she private about such things? Bearian (talk) 17:29, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

See WP:DOB for guidelines about publishing DOB on Wikipedia. Generally there should be more than one source, and they need to be reliable. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 23:21, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Brentwood, Basildon, and Billericay

edit

Do we have a better source for her place of birth? Freedmb says Brentwood. Various other sources say Basildon or Billericay. At present, the article says that she was born in Basildon and grew up in the nearby town of Basildon, but it previously gave her place of birth as Billericay. The Guardian article cited doesn't actually say that she was born in Basildon, though the other reference does. Can anybody clarify? Jean-de-Nivelle (talk) 16:23, 20 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

We can't use freebmd anyway, because WP:PRIMARY SOURCES, and the other privacy concerns outlined in WP:BLP, but just be aware that the UK birth registrations place of birth is the registration district, not necessarily the actual place of birth - see here - Billericay and Basildon were within the Brentford registration district. I have now reviewed and updated the info per the book source added by a previous editor, using the POB per that book, although do have reservations about publishing DOB on the basis of a single source, per WP:DOB. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 00:57, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
I take your point about freebmd, but there are also a number of published sources that give her birthplace as Billericay. Take your pick. Jean-de-Nivelle (talk) 19:41, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
