"authoritarian totalitarian regime"
editTotalitarianism is just the most extreme form of authoritarianism; they are not mutually exclusive concepts. I would suggest either changing this in the opening sentence to "authoritarian to totalitarian" or removing one of the words. Geolodus (talk) 09:27, 9 November 2019 (UTC)
- Nobody has replied, so I will just go ahead. Geolodus (talk) 09:05, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
- Bro bashar is like Hitler almost. He poisons children... He is a totallitarianist for sure.. He is not a good person 2001:1970:55E8:7F00:60F6:D4AD:9672:10DE (talk) 19:35, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- and bashar is the leader of the family right now so he represents them 2001:1970:55E8:7F00:60F6:D4AD:9672:10DE (talk) 19:36, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Geolodus, the IP does make a point. I’ve heard numerous stories about the Assad regime and none of them are good. Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 18:26, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

- Plus the Assad regime is listed on our list of totalitarian regimes. Hurricane Clyde 🌀my talk page! 18:30, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- This was 5 years ago. I hardly remember my opinions back in 2019 nor what change I made to this article which has been updated countless times since then. Regardless, I support the simple word "totalitarian" since long before you pinged me. Glades12 (talk) 22:19, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

Al-Assad family → Assad family – On Google Scholar, "Assad family" returns 2420 results, while "al-Assad family" returns 441 results. Considering the latter results would be included in the former, the "Assad family" is still 82 percent of the cases. NGrams also shows that publications mostly use "Assad family". Aintabli (talk) 23:17, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
- This move would also align with the title of Fall of the Assad regime. There is a relevant move discussion on the name of this article here currently with a unanimous vote against changing this name on the same basis of WP:COMMONNAME. It is likely that the name of that article will not change, which will create a mismatch between these two closely related articles. Aintabli (talk) 23:23, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
- The "al-" prefix in Arabic is the equivalent of "the" in English, it would make no sense to label that page "Fall of the the Assad regime". – Anwon (talk) 02:03, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

- Weak Oppose, The Assad Family sounds right as "Al" means "the" in Arabic. Theofunny (talk) 14:25, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- Whether something "sounds right" is itself a very vague statement. Article titles do not include "the" (see WP:THE), unless there is a very specific meaning to it that distinguishes/disambiguates the subject, which is not the case. Aintabli (talk) 16:08, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

Additional similarly named families
editNot intending WP:OTHERTHINGSEXIST, but rather, after this it may make sense to move things to a broader scale. Category:Syrian_families has about 20 entries that would seem to have the same situation, some "Al-..." others "Al ...". I'd prefer to see this on WP:RM where moving that many articles (and categories?) belongs. (I just looked up similar family categories in other nations where Arabic is used and they have examples as well, so *50* articles or categories?)Naraht (talk) 14:21, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
