Surname
editAt what point did "Murie" become his surname and why? Death of his birth father? 69.251.221.115 (talk) 15:07, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, your hunch is correct. Here's the text from the relevant footnote in the article:
- Joachim Murie died in 1895. His widow, Marie, married Ed Winstrom, their son Adolf was born in 1899, Winstrom died shortly thereafter, and Marie resumed using the surname ‘Murie.’ Once he was old enough, Adolf legally changed his surname to Murie to match his half-brother and mother and subsequently began spelling his first name ‘Adolph.’
- See: A Wilderness Apprenticeship in "Environmental History", October 2000, p. 542, Footnote 6, at: [1] I believe you can now set up a free JSTOR account which lets you look at up to 3 articles every 14 days, so you can check it out there if your library doesn't carry "Environmental History."
