Fakhri was appointed to his position as Special Rapporteur by the UN Human Rights Council and assumed his functions on May 1, 2020.[1] he served as an independent advisor to the UN summit on food systems but was critical of its effectiveness.[2] Fakhri called on the government of Venezuela to develop a robust plan to address hunger and malnutrition and for an end to the economic sanctions imposed on the country.[3] He believes that Israel is deliberately starving Palestinians in Gaza saying "In my view as a UN human rights expert, this is now a situation of genocide."[4]
