Jilin University (JLU) is a leading public research university, located in Changchun, Jilin, China. Established in 1946, the university has grown into a large and highly respected institution that serves as a leader in education, research, and innovation. JLU is directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education. The university is strongly supported by China's Project 211, Project 985, and the Double First-Class Construction, which are national-level strategic programs aimed at fostering world-class universities in China. The university’s motto, “Truth-Seeking, Innovation, Aspiration, and Virtue,” reflects its commitment to academic excellence and character development. It currently enrolls 75,332 students, including 41,846 undergraduates, 22,769 master’s students, and 9,561 doctoral students.

Jilin University is one of China’s most prestigious and comprehensive public research universities. The university’s campus covers an area of 1815 acres, its buildings have a total floor area of 30.78 million square feet. The university is home to 52 colleges covering 13 major disciplinary categories, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, arts, and interdisciplinary studies. The university offers 140 undergraduate programs, 56 master’s programs, 48 doctoral programs, and 7 programs for emerging interdisciplinary studies. Additionally, it has 36 professional master’s programs, 9 professional doctoral programs, and 48 postdoctoral research stations. 19 disciplines (fields) rank in the top 1% globally in the ESI, with 5 disciplines in the top 0.1% globally.
The university has 6,326 full-time faculty members. Among them, there are 2,456 full professors, 12 fellows of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 7 national distinguished professors in philosophy and social sciences, 21 members of the State Council Academic Degree Evaluation Committee, 7 national-level teaching masters, 30 experts selected for the National "Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talent Project," 42 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 56 recipients of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, and 152 experts included in Jilin Province’s "Changbai Mountain Scholars" program.

History
editFounded in 1946 as the Northeast College of Administration in Harbin, Heilongjiang, Jilin University merged with many universities and colleges and changed its name many times. In May 1948, the Northeast Administration College merged with the Harbin University and was renamed Northeast Academy of Science. In November 1948, the Northeast Academy of Science moved to Shenyang, Liaoning and restored the name of Northeast Administration College. In 1950, it was renamed as Northeast People's University. During the Korean War it was relocated to Changchun, Jilin. In 1958, it was renamed Jilin University.[4]
In 2000, Jilin University, Jilin University of Technology, Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences, Changchun University of Science and Technology (established 1951), and Changchun Institute of Posts and Telecommunications combined to form the current Jilin University. On August 29, 2004, the University of Military Logistics also merged into Jilin University.
In April 2006, an institute dedicated to projects of military interest was created within Jilin University.[5]

As of 2021, the CWTS Leiden Ranking table 2021 ranked Jilin University at 11th in the world based on their publications for the time period 2016–2019.[20] In 2021, it ranked 70th among the universities around the world by SCImago Institutions Rankings.[21] The university ranked 66th among the leading institutions globally in the Nature Index 2021 Annual Tables by Nature Research, that measure the high-quality research published in 82 high-quality science journals.[22]
The University Ranking By Academic Performance 2021/22 ranked Jilin University at 105th globally.[23] Jilin University ranked 223rd worldwide and 23rd nationwide in the Center for World University Ranking (CWUR) 2022/23.[24]
