Peyote Cactus

Peyote, Lophophora williamsii. also known as Mescal buttons is a spineless cactus. It is found in the Southwestern United States south into central Mexico. It is also found in the Chihuahuan Desert within this area.

  • Peyote grows in those areas especially where limestone is in the soil. It has small pink flowers that bloom from March to May and has bloomed as late as September.
  • Indigenious North American peoples have used it for religious purposes for thousands of years. It is also used as a recreational drug for its psychoactive properties.
