English: Mulwalwa mask, from Kuba (Democratic Republic of the Congo), made of wood and raffia. 19th or early 20th century, acquired in 1910.
This mask embodies a powerful nature spirit. As there are no holes throug which a performer could see, it was probably mounted on a wall at an initiation camp, signaling that the iniation was almost complete.
