English: Punakawan Empat are four land deities. They are Semar, the most sacred figure of the wayang shadow play, and his three sons:Gareng, Petruk and Bagong. They are known to be the guardian spirit of the Javanese, who protect the land, ensure a bountiful harvest for farmers, and act as the spiritual mentors of their adherents. This is why they always play the role of sages in wayang. Genealogically speaking, Semar is the second descendants of God, whom his elder brother, Togog, precedes. He has a younger brother, Batara Guru, the noble lord. Among these, Batara Guru is identified as Syiwa(Shiva), the principal deity of Hinduism. These mythological traditions also manifest the syncretic beliefs of Hindu mysticism and Javanese folklore.
