Bibliotheca is a multinational library technology company headquartered in Lake Elmo, Minnesota, United States. The company was established in 2011 through the merger of three independent library technology firms: Bibliotheca (Switzerland), Intellident (United Kingdom), and Integrated Technology Group, ITG (North America).[1]

In 2012, the group acquired Trion AG, a European provider of automated material handling solutions. In 2015, Bibliotheca purchased 3M's Library Systems business and acquired the assets of its remaining global business.[1][2]

Products and Services

edit

Bibliotheca provides technology solutions designed to support library operations, including self-service kiosks, security gates, automated material handling systems, and remote lockers. The company’s open system allows libraries to offer extended, unstaffed operating hours.[3]

In 2023, the company launched the smartShelf borrow, a system that automates the return and borrowing process, and the cloudCheck tablet, a compact device for flexible self-service use.[4][5] In April 2024, Bibliotheca sold its cloudLibrary platform to OCLC, a nonprofit library technology cooperative.[6]

Leadership and Strategic Direction

edit

In 2023, Bibliotheca appointed Joe Grillo as its CEO, succeeding Ray Hood. Other key leadership changes included the return of Matt Bellamy as President of the Americas, Jim Hopwood as Managing Director for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and Craig Holmes as Chief Financial Officer.[7] In 2024, Delaney Levey returned to the company as Chief Product Officer.[8]

Bibliotheca is financially backed by One Equity Partners[9], a division of JP Morgan Chase & Co. The group focuses on the development, deployment, and support of RFID-based solutions, with a particular focus on public and private libraries, as well as academic library markets.[10]
