Aliza Layne
editAliza Layne is author and illustrator of award winning graphic novel, Beetle & the Hollowbones (2020) as well as the webcomic, "Demon Street". She is working on the second installment of the Beetle & the Hollowbones trilogy titled Beetle & the Chimera Carnival, which is scheduled to release in 2025.
"Demon Street"
editLayne started her career electronically publishing the webcomic "Demon Street". The first panels were released February 18th, 2013, and Layne has continued to update weekly in the years since. "Demon Street" is a fantasy adventure story. The narrative follows Sep and Raina as they go on quests and battle monsters. The webcomic is intended for audiences 12 and up.
Beetle & the Hollowbones
editBeetle & the Hollowbones is a middle grade graphic novel that follows a young goblin-witch named, Beetle. While spending time at the local mall, Beetle befriends B.G., a nonbinary ghost. The two embark on a quest to disconnect B.G's spirit from the confines of the shopping mall. Simultaneously, Beetle attempts to navigate a budding relationship with past friend and rival, Kat.
With the story and illustrations done by Layne, she did receive assistance from Kristin Acampora and Natalie Riess. The novel is geared towards ages anywhere from 8-12.
Stonewall Book Awards
editLayne's first traditionally published novel, was a winner of the Stonewall Book Award in 2021. The honors are given to books that are inclusive of the LGBTQIA experience.
Banned Books
editDespite the fact that Beetle & the Hollowbones was marketed as a book for younger readers, people have begun to question if it is truly appropriate for the designated age group. Due to the inclusion of LGBTQIA themes, it has been challenged alongside many other novels that highlight the experiences of the queer community.
When faced with a potential book ban, Layne noted that "libraries offer a controlled, safe environment for children to explore themes they might otherwise encounter in less safe ways" and in the future she only plans to be "'more aggressive' in portraying a range of experiences that young people encounter as they grow up" (Royal Examiner).
