Early life

edit

Suman was born in Bhedihari (part of Kalikamai Rural Municipality), a village in the Parsa District of southern Nepal to a Bhojpuri family.[2][3][4] The family lived in a self-built clay house with modest infrastructure and grew their own food.[5] Suman went to Saint Xavier School in Birgunj.

Upon her father remarrying a British woman,[6] Suman moved to Brighton, England when she was seven. She attended Varndean Secondary School[7] and Sussex Downs College (now East Sussex College Lewes)[8] before going on to train at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts, graduating in 2018.[9][10]

Career

edit

Shortly after graduating, Suman made her television debut with minor roles in Casualty and Ackley Bridge.[11][12][13] She had a major guest role in the Doctor Who series 11 episode "Demons of the Punjab" as a young version of companion Yasmin Khan's grandmother, Umbreen.[14] Suman took over the recurring role of Naya from Medalion Rahimi in season 2 of the CW series The Outpost.[15]

In October 2019, it was announced Suman would star as Inej Ghafa in the 2021 Netflix series Shadow and Bone, an adaptation of the fantasy book series The Grisha Trilogy and the Six of Crows Duology by Leigh Bardugo.[16][17] The series was cancelled by Netflix after two successful seasons,[18][19][20] but fans are currently campaigning to get it back, with more than 200,000 signatures asking to save it.[21]

Suman has upcoming roles in the Paramount series NCIS: Tony and Ziva as Claudette and the Netflix political thriller The Choice.[22]
