Position Summary
The Chief Research Compliance Officer/Research Integrity Officer (CRCO/RIO) is responsible for ensuring Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) compliance with all applicable federal and state research compliance and integrity requirements, which includes applicable laws and regulations concerning responsible and ethical conduct of research, and compliance with institutional policies.
As the WCM CRCO/RIO, the incumbent is responsible for creating an institutional culture of compliance with applicable research integrity policies and laws. They will serve as a leader and advisor on research compliance issues related to oversight of: 1) Human Research Protections (HRP) which includes WCM Institutional Review Boards (lRBs) and other related components; 2) Conflicts of Interest (COI); and 3) Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The incumbent will also serve as an ex-officio members of these committees. Additionally, they will serve as an advisor and member of other relevant WCM and Cornell University (CU) committees and working groups.
The CRCO/RIO will work with WCM leadership and collaborate with the CU CRCO in developing policies related to research involving human and animal subjects, research misconduct, conflicts of interest, human embryonic stem cell research (HESC), and export controls. The CRCO/RIO will also provide guidance, information, and education to faculty, staff, students, and administrators regarding the interpretation and implementation of the related regulatory and policy requirements.
Job Responsibilities
- Reports to WCM Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Research regarding human subjects research.
- Reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Research regarding animal research, laboratory research, research integrity, conflicts of interest, and Export Control.
- Coordinate Export Control activities with the CU Export Control Officer who has responsibility for Export Control activities across the entire CU campus.
- Review and assess allegations of scientific and research misconduct on both the WCM and WCMQ campuses; administer WCM Research Integrity policies and process.
- Coordinate all research compliance activities with leadership on the WCMQ campus.
- Report findings to the Institutional/Deciding Official. Liaise/work with, when necessary, the federal Office of Research Integrity (ORI). Maintain records as required by WCM policy and ORI.
- Ensure that WCM policies related to research involving human subjects & animal subjects, HESC, export controls, research misconduct, & conflicts of interest are consistent w/ CU/WCM policies & local, state, federal, & other applicable rules & regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
- Advanced Degree in a related field (JD, PhD or Master’s in Science).
Experience
A minimum of 10 plus years of experience working in an established institutional research administration setting, including experience directly related to the responsible conduct of research, preferably in an academic or health sciences setting. Extensive knowledge of the current federal regulations related to research, including research misconduct and conflicts of interest.

- Diligent in keeping current with government and university regulations and guidelines.
- Ability to work effectively and diplomatically in a professional manner.
- Develop strong relationships and trust internally with faculty and their staff, College Deans, Department Chairs and College administrative staff, as well as externally with federal agencies and other key constituents.
Licenses and Certifications
- Certified IRB Professional (CIP) preferred.
