Reports To: Special Education Director

Pay Grade/Days: Teacher / 187

Primary Purpose

To facilitate participation of students with disabilities with typically developing peers in age-appropriate physical education activities or within a continuum of appropriate services.

Education/Certification

Bachelor’s degree from accredited university

Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignments

Special Knowledge/Skills

Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area

Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation

General knowledge of curriculum and instruction

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Major Responsibilities And Duties

  • Instruct students, using adaptive physical education techniques, to improve physical fitness, gross motor skills, perceptual motor skills, or sports and game achievement.
  • Provide adaptive physical education services to students with intellectual disabilities, autism, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic impairments, or other disabling condition.
  • Adapt instruction techniques to the age and skill levels of students.
  • Advise education professional of students’ physical abilities or disabilities and the accommodations required to enhance their school performance.
  • Assess students’ physical progress or needs.
  • Assist in screening or placement of students in adaptive physical education programs.
  • Coordinate the Special Olympics activities, trainings, and responsibilities and duties as Head of Delegation for the District.
  • Communicate behavioral observations and student progress reports to students, parents, teachers, or administrators.
  • Establish and maintain standards of behavior to create safe, orderly, and effective environments for learning.
  • Evaluate the motor needs of individual students to determine their need for adapted physical education services.
  • Maintain inventory of instructional equipment, materials, or aids.
  • Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage student behavior and administer discipline. This includes intervening in crisis situations and physically restraining students as necessary according to IEP.
  • Consult with PE teachers regarding management of student behavior according to IEP.
  • Consult district and outside resource people regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs of students.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Maintain a daily “Time and Effort” log to reflect actual daily activities and time spent on each activity; each week submit signed/dated daily “Time and Effort” logs for the prior week to the principal for signature. Principal will forward the “Time and Effort” logs to district’s Special Education office.
