Vice President, Chief Architect (Remote)

Reporting to the company’s Chief Technologist, the Vice President, Chief Architect for the Chief Operating Officer (COO) organization will be accountable for the architectural future vision of technology in COO’s organization and for accelerating the representative platform journey at the company. You have expertise in several key areas that revolve around designing and managing the architecture of an organization that is responsible for Commerce, Marketing, Sales, Customer Success, Finance, Data and AI systems. You will lead the technical direction to accomplish the company’s goals, digital transformation programs, provide guidance to executive management on new technologies and buy vs. build decisions and champion initiatives such as resilience, engineering, and operational excellence within the engineering community. The company defines architecture as encompassing the fundamental organization of a system, the standards, technologies, and principles employed, and the governance of its evolution. Thus, your role is beyond point-in-time designs, rather to ensure that innumerable designs and iterations work together to create a sum greater than its parts.

This role can work remotely, hybrid, or in person. Travel to development team locations and customer events will be approximately 10%.

Responsibilities

  • You will lead a team of Architects.
  • You will oversee governance of the product/solution architectures including (1) ongoing reengineering and modification of the existing architectures; (2) creating or developing architectural advances to accommodate innovation, future features and capabilities while driving based on end-to-end standards and maintaining architectural adaptability.
  • You will conduct architecture and deployment reviews and ensure that architecture achieves the desired quality attributes such as security, scalability, and resilience.
  • You will create both short and long-term technology roadmaps, making assertions about technology directions, customer value, and improved developer velocity in partnership with other central engineering and architecture groups.
  • You will partner with Product Management, Engineering, and Experience Design to lead decisions on future platform and technology choices (build vs. buy), lead and collaborate in the creation and/or development of advanced foundational architecture that will enable innovation and feature expansion, and provide strategic and tactical direction to product management, experience design, and development teams.
  • You will partner with infrastructure and operations teams to build replication of data across environments, optimizing deployment, and management of services.
  • You will align COO’s technical direction with business needs, leading the team to make the correct compromises between short-term business opportunity and long-term technical vision.
  • Embody and promote the company’s corporate culture code.
  • Mentor architects on career paths, build teams, develop leaders, and lead necessary organizational change to maximize the company’s results.
  • Advocate for systems thinking in solving current and future technological challenges the team faces.
  • Champion modern development practices, such as Agile and Open Source.
  • The company employs a Chief Architect for each industry cloud, for the platform services, and COO organizations. Collaborate with other Chief Architects to create a technical vision, capability map, set context for and drive alignment of technical work across the company’s technical leadership, advise on architectural matters when requested, and escalate concerns as appropriate.
  • Write and review documentation on technical aspects and/or architecture.
  • Create followership through inspirational leadership and participate in internal and industry events.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10 years of experience leading architecture and/or engineering at a SaaS/product/technology company.
  • Experience in an enterprise architecture leadership role at a SaaS/product/technology company, with focus on .COM, Commerce, and backend services.
  • BS or MS in engineering or computer science (advanced certifications is a plus).
  • Experience with Agile methodologies, DevOps practices, and modern software development lifecycles.
  • Strong understanding of business process and driving digital transformation.
