Healthcare Quality Informatics Specialist

Job Summary

Under the leadership of the Chief Experience Office and Director of Quality & Safety, plans, conducts, and supports activities involving the gathering and analysis of clinical quality data from multiple sources (e.g. JUVO/MIDAS, Meditech, clinical operations, patient experience, etc.) to extract trends and business insights. This role is responsible for the development and system administration of software systems that are utilized in storing clinical quality data. Key characteristics for success include analytical aptitude, innovation and an excellent communicator who is able to tell the story behind raw data to non-technical audiences. A goal for this position is to operate efficiently and meet the needs our customers.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS

Responsible To: Chief Experience Officer

Workers Supervised: None

Inter-Relationships: All MH departments, the Medical Staff and various external agencies

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Understand healthcare operations and clinical systems.
  • System Administration for MIDAS/JUVO/Statit software
  • Act as a liaison between Quality and Information Services to develop, implement and maintain systems to extract raw clinical data.
  • Pull and integrate data from disparate sources for key improvement metrics associated with internal and external quality goals and initiatives (e.g. MHA-Keystone, CMS, NDNQI, Leapfrog, etc.)
  • Evaluate and preprocess raw information.
  • Delve into data and discover discrepancies and patterns.
  • Build models that capture a wide range of health care operations.
  • Present and explain information in a way that non-technical employees can understand.
  • Suggest ways to both increase healthcare quality and reduce costs. (e.g. add value)
  • Collaborate with management and internal teams to implement and evaluate improvements.
  • Participates in various hospital committees and teams as assigned.
  • Maintains current knowledge of data requirements for quality initiatives and pending changes required from regulatory bodies or other external agencies.
  • Works collaboratively with other departments to achieve quality improvement goals.
  • Acts as a resource to MH Departments for quality improvement issues.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and supports hospital mission, vision, value statements, standards of behavior, policies, operating instructions, confidentiality statements, corporate compliance plan and the code of ethical behavior.
  • Delivers consistently excellent customer service to patients, co-workers, volunteers and others. Specifically, listen and ask questions for understanding, always ask how else you can help, follow-up to ensure that an issue has been resolved.
  • Act as a public relations ambassador for Memorial Healthcare at all times. Specifically, speak positively about the organization, manage up co-workers, managers and others.
  • Has a working knowledge of Memorial Healthcare services; reports issues, problems and ideas to the appropriate person in a timely manner.
  • Enhances personal growth through participation in internal and external education programs.
  • Performs other related duties as required or requested.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Informatics, Computer Science or related field.

Experience

  • Experience in data analysis and visualization methods
  • Knowledge of Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) frameworks
  • Experience in SQL and analysis tools (e.g. SAS)
  • Knowledge of Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) and data management systems
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills
  • Organizational and problem solving aptitude.
  • Experience or knowledge in healthcare informatics preferred.
  • Understanding of healthcare systems and processes preferred.

Essential Physical Abilities/Motor Skills

  • Sedentary Work: Frequently required to stand, kneel and crouch. On a daily basis may be required to move about, sit, climb stairs and bend. Is frequently required to lift and carry up to 20 lbs. May be required to push/pull/carry items between 20-100 lbs.
  • Vision: Requires the ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye. Near acuity: Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Midrange Acuity: Clarity of vision at distances of more than 20 inches and less than 20 feet.
  • Motor Coordination: While performing the duties of the job is required to regularly to hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. Must be able to travel independently throughout the hospital; access patients/families including areas confined by space and/or equipment.
  • Speaking/Hearing: Ability to give and receive information through speaking and listening skills.

Essential Mental Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience in critical thinking, problem resolution, active listening.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret a variety of documents including, but not limited to policies, operating instructions, white papers, regulations, rules and laws.
  • Ability to write reports containing technical information.
  • Ability to evaluate medical records for compliance with standards of care.
  • Ability to analyze data.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs.
  • Ability to adapt and maintain focus in fast paced, quickly changing or stressful situations.

Interpersonal Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to interact with people at various levels in a courteous, tactful and poised manner.
  • Ability to facilitate groups composed of people of differing levels of education, experience and ages, including highly emotional situations.
  • Exceptional communication techniques-both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated skills in service recovery.

Employees in this position are expected to have access to protected health information and other confidential business information from throughout the organization as is needed to fulfill their responsibilities in evaluating and reducing risk to the organization. No protected health information will be disclosed outside the organization unless specifically required by state or federal law.
