Position Summary

The Wellness Director is accountable for successfully developing and managing all program areas assigned to him/her which include new program development, fiscal management, effective supervision of program staff, direction and implementation of all program delivery, quality, promotion and monitoring results against pre-stated performance goals.

Essential Functions

 Staff Recruitment and Development: Work with staff to develop growth opportunities and to

increase capacity within organization. Recruit and retain qualified wellness staff (i.e. personal

trainers, fitness instructors).

 Accountabilities: group exercise; personal training; wellness center operations, fitness-related

promotions, special events, and member engagement programs.

 Physical Environment: Responsible to ensure disinfection, cleanliness, and orderliness of all

wellness related areas. Responsible for ensuring that all equipment is properly maintained and

repaired when necessary.

 Budget Development: Responsible for developing annual budget of anticipated income and

expenditures. Responsible for maintaining, controlling and evaluating the income/expenses of

budget. Responsible for generating required reports for association and branch.

 Sales: Responsible for establishing collaborative relationships with businesses and the local

community to promote programs. Compiles statistical data related program outcomes and makes

appropriate recommendations to supervisor (i.e. discontinue programming, increase amount of

program offerings).

 Program/Marketing Development: Promotes and incorporates the YMCA core values and character

development model in to all program activities. Develops and distributes branch specific

marketing materials of program information and assist with Association-Wide Marketing (i.e.

brochures, newsletters and special event promotion) through various media. Develops and

implements programming for designated sessions. Actively contributes to the Leadership

Innovation Team meetings to establish new program activities, and expands program within the

community in accordance with the Association and branch strategic plans.

 Ensure that member and community needs are being met by implementing programming for all

ages (youth through older adults). Create innovative programs to increase member involvement

and retention.

 Public Relations/Community Affairs: Represent YMCA in appropriate business & community

groups. This includes providing timely publicity, developing a working relationship with local

schools and other community groups.

 Fund Development Activities: Participate in and / or coordinate fundraising activities as assigned

by supervisor. Actively participate in Annual Campaign.

 Supervise employees in assigned accountabilities, monitor site operation and scheduling and

verify time sheets and actual hours worked.

 Identify training needs and initiate development activities of supervisees. Recommend effective

personnel management actions (i.e. employee counseling process).

 Assure that new employees complete orientation and training according to established guidelines

and provide on the job training as required by supervisees.

 Maintains complete documentation of CPR and fitness certifications and expiration dates. Ensures

all staff remain current in required certifications and that all staff are properly certified in their

areas of work.

 Ensure duties, responsibilities and accountabilities of all direct reports are defined and

understood. Ensure that the individual understands the standards for acceptable performance

 Notify Human Resource Department of job openings, follow hiring and interview process. Make

final selection and maintain qualified staff.

 Keeps employees informed as to association and branch events, plans and progress on

organizational goals.

Qualifications

Education:

 Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

 Preferred majors: Exercise Physiology, Physical Education, Sports Management

 In lieu of Bachelor’s Degree, Associate’s Degree in the related field and 2-3 years of related work experience or High School diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency and 4-6 years of related work experience

Experience

 (2) two years experience in programming.

 (1) one year experience in staff supervision.

 Experience in developing programs for wellness and fitness is preferred

Certification(s)and Requirements

 Certification in CPR at the level of Basic Life Support or Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen Administration and associated-determined safety training required within 30 days of hire.

 Current certification from an NCCA-accredited organization in either Personal Training or Group Exercise.

Technical Skills And Knowledge

 Must be able to read, and write legibly and in an understandable manner.

 Must have basic expertise in common office software, including Word and Excel.

 Must be able to effectively communicate with and observe program participants, members and YMCA staff.

 Proficient in and able to clearly communicate specific components and usage of cardio-respiratory, selectorized, free weight, and other common exercise equipment (i.e., rubberized resistance, stability balls, medicine balls, etc.).

 Ability to conduct scientifically valid fitness assessments and appropriately interpret the results.

 Demonstrate commitment to the mission, cause of the YMCA, and uphold its values and ethics.

 Ability to work effectively work with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions

 Willingness and ability to be a mandated reporter for any signs or suspicion of child abuse and neglect. All employees are required to follow the child abuse and neglect reporting process: completion of Suspected Child Abuse/Neglect reporting form, calling children protective services (696-Kids) and notifying your immediate supervisor, branch executive, risk management and human resources department(s).

 Physical ability to lead exercise classes, demonstrate exercises, and effectively communicate with and observe participants.

 Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs

 The ability to perform frequent amounts of sitting, standing, swimming, walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, bending and or instructing others for the duration of their shift

 The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

Work Environment

 The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to noisy.

 May be required to work outside and on occasion may encounter inclement weather.

 Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.

 Performs work in an office setting with moderate levels of noise, sitting for long periods of time,

repetitive motion using computers and phones, with exposure to fluorescent lighting

 Working area may be often slippery and wet.
