About the role:

We are currently seeking a Safety/Compliance to join our Safety and Compliance Teams at our Twentymile Mine location. The Hourly Range for this position is between $37.17-$41.90 depending on experience.

Reporting to the Compliance Manager. The scope of your role will be to Assist Safety and Compliance Managers in administering the day to day /short term MSHA Compliance program at the mine. This role offers a great opportunity for growth and to expand knowledge and skills.

Twentymile mine is an underground coal mine located in Colorado’s scenic Yampa Valley about 20 miles outside Steamboat Springs, a ski resort and vacation destination. The surrounding area has towns both large and small including Oak Creek, Craig, Hayden, and Steamboat Springs. Hunting and fishing are very popular in this area. Shotgun and archery hunting is allowed on Peabody property for employees with proper authorization.

Peabody Twentymile has a safety-first culture and has been recognized two years in a row by the National Mining Association as the safest underground coal mine in the United Sates. The award recognizes coal and mineral mining operations with the lowest MSHA reportable injury rate. In 2023, Twentymile completed three years without a single reportable injury.

Duties will include:

  • Escorts State and Federal Inspectors when they are onsite.
  • Provide direction and oversight of all dust related activities at the mine location on their shift including: Preparation, assembly, cleaning, charging and pre-shift programming of dust monitors; Monitoring dust levels during the shift; Conducting mid-shift dust monitors checks; Be a contact with MSHA on all dust related issues at the mine location on their shift; Down loading of Continuous Personal Dust Monitor (CPDM) data to Peabody network and transferring to MSHA database; Responsible for the posting of all dust sample results.
  • Process accident reports, investigate accidents, and escort employees to medical treatment.
  • Conduct and participate in training, which would include, but not be limited to hazard training, task training, new miner, experienced miner and refresher training.
  • Lead and participate in safety meetings and be a resource in providing safety meeting information.
  • Conduct and monitor respirable dust sampling and noise sampling surveys.
  • Conduct safety and compliance examinations for both surface and underground.
  • Maintain mine markings such as escapeway reflectors, signs, safety notices and others as required.
  • Inventory and maintain first aid supplies.
  • Calibrate and maintain gas detection instruments.
  • Inspect fire extinguishers, self-contained self-rescuers and refuge alternatives.
  • Provide safety, training and compliance reports.
  • Be engaged in the development of safety improvement plans. Report any unsafe conditions or activity to the appropriate Production Supervisor or Mine Manager.
  • Assist with the implementation of action plans if an on-shift sample exceeds the Equivalent Concentration Value (ECV).
  • Coordinate efforts to ensure corrective actions are taken during the shift to correct any potential deficiencies.
  • On-shift notification of MSHA of production changes.
  • Calculation of rolling average tonnage per MMU.
  • Other job duties and responsibilities as assigned.

About you:

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must be certified or become certified within six months in the following: Mine Foreman, Mine Manager or State equivalent, Oxygen & Methane, Noise Level Sampling, CPDM Respirable Dust Sampling.
  • Must have computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet, database programs and Internet. MS Office Suite Preferred.
  • Knowledge of surface areas and underground mining operations.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal mining regulations pertaining to underground and surface.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of mine employees and regulatory agencies and communicate to resolve issues.
  • Ability to add, subtract multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist.
  • Possess good interpersonal skills and be able to function effectively as a participant of a mine team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills and ability to coordinate with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Willing to work any shift and on scheduled weekends.
  • Minimum of four years of underground coal mining experience.
  • One year of underground safety experience is preferred.

Physical requirements:

  • Must have the ability to stand for 4 to 8 hours on uneven rocky surfaces.
  • Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles or computer.
  • Must have the ability to walk for up to 4 hours at a time.
  • Must have the ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds on a frequent basis. Must have the ability to occasionally lift items weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • Must have the ability to climb on and off equipment and ladders.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • NOTE: This is a “safety sensitive role”. Individuals in safety sensitive roles cannot have:
    • an uncontrolled condition which is likely to cause loss of consciousness or ability to control a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
    • an uncontrolled respiratory or cardiac dysfunction likely to interfere with the ability to operate a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
    • a current clinical diagnosis of high blood pressure likely to interfere with ability to operate a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
    • a current or unregulated mental or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with ability to drive a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
    • impaired hearing (with or without hearing aids) that would prevent the person from hearing crucial safety information or alarms;
    • impaired vision. Individuals must meet the minimum vison requirements of at least 20/40 acuity (Snellen) with or without correction and at least 70° field of vision in horizontal meridian measured.
