Part-time Health Information Technology Instructor

Blackhawk Technical College (BTC) is seeking a part-time instructor to teach in the Health Information Technology (HIT) Associate of Applied Science degree program. Candidates will design and create original course content within in the Learning Management System (Blackboard Ultra). Curriculum and course(s) will be developed using a Competency-Based Education (CBE) format.

  • Curriculum Development.
  • Design and develop a Blackboard Ultra course shell for HIT courses assigned by the Program Director. Course development includes the identification of course competencies and instructional materials (text, library resources, etc.).
  • Creation of course assessments for a CBE program. This includes the assessment, the answer key for the assessment, and a corresponding CBE grading rubric.
  • Ensure that curriculum and instructional materials are competency-based, current, consistent with employer expectations, and meet Quality Matters (QM) Standards.
  • Facilitation of Learning. Plan, prepare, and deliver instruction and facilitate the learning of students. Assess the learning outcomes of students at the unit, course, and program level.
  • Classroom Management. Fulfill assigned schedule, maintain accurate student attendance and grade records, maintain instructional environment with emphasis on safety, housekeeping, and equipment security, and ensure opportunities for student/participant evaluation.
  • Interpersonal/Team Skills. Participate in activities of the instructional team, including planning, development, scheduling, and budgeting as a cooperative and professional team player.
  • Student Support and Guidance. Support students as a mentor and role model in the achievement of their learning and career goals
  • Meet Wisconsin Technical College System requirements through Faculty Quality Assurances System.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong communication, organization, interpersonal, problem-solving, and counseling skills.
  • Current knowledge and skill in the use of information and computer technology, at minimum with the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work with students with special needs based on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA.)
  • Current knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting clinical education, students, and the profession of health information management.
  • Ability to meet the faculty requirements as stated in the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) standards.
  • Member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
  • Able to initiate, administer, assess, and document health science education programs.
  • Able to work independently and coordinate work with colleagues and peers.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management (HIM) from a CAHIIM accredited program OR Associate’s degree in Health Information Management (HIM) from a CAHIIM accredited program and a Bachelor’s degree in Health Care or related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years, 4,000 hours of related HIM occupational experience of which at least one year (2,000 hours) shall be within 5 years of the date of appointment.
  • Current credential with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) in the primary areas being developed. AHIMA preferred credentials include RHIA or RHIT, but accepted AHIMA credentials include RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CDIP, CHDA, or CHPS.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in any of the following instruction, student guidance, training, educational theories and techniques.
  • Master’s degree in a health-related field.
