Job Summary

The Engineer will provide technical assistance to the Vehicle Maintenance Department and participate as a key member of the engineering teams for the monitoring, maintenance, procurement and/or overhaul of new or existing equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare technical specifications.
  • Participate in design reviews. Inspect major systems/components at vendor or car builder facilities.
  • Review drawings, manuals, and test procedures.
  • Participate in the testing of major systems and vehicles.
  • Review systems and vehicle modifications.
  • Assist in the coordination and planning of testing.
  • Assist in the preparation of responses to technical issues.
  • Conduct failure analysis of systems/components.
  • Complete warranty evaluation and analysis.
  • Prepare written reports as needed.
  • Remain current with the MBTA's Safety Management System (SMS) Plan as well as the position's outline responsibilities.
  • Drive a company or personal vehicle to inspect work and to conduct investigations into vehicle derailments and major system failures that disrupt revenue service and to assist at emergencies and/or events as needed.
  • Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor or co-worker in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Adhere to the rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) and policies of the Authority including the EEO, Anti-Discrimination and Anti Harassment and Anti Retaliation policies.
  • Drive a company or personal vehicle to visit work sites.
  • Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor or co-worker in a professional and courteous manner.

  • Perform related duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technology, electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology, electronic engineering, electronic engineering technology or computer engineering from an accredited institution


Minimum Experience And Required Skills

  • Knowledge of Electrical or Mechanical Engineering practices and of Electrical or Mechanical Components and Specifications
  • Ability to learn how to analyze Electrical Circuits and Parameters
  • Ability to learn an apply stress analysis and materials evaluation.
  • Ability to learn Electrical Components, Failure Mechanisms, and their interaction with rail transit vehicles and systems.
  • Ability to learn Real Time Networks including network communication theory, test design and applications
  • Ability to comprehend electrical, operational, and/or mechanical characteristics of rail transit vehicles.
  • Effective organizational, analytical, time management and multi-tasking skills.
  • Working knowledge of CAD, Word, Excel, Mainframe or database applications.
  • Effectively communicate with regulatory agencies, community organizations, and others on technical and sensitive matters.
  • Have excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to provide internal and external customers with a courteous and professional experience.

Preferred Experience And Skills

  • Three (3) or more years of engineering experience.
  • Experience with transit vehicles.
  • Experience with network control of systems.
  • Experience with CAD systems.

  • Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and medical Clinic screening, potentially including a physical examination and drug and alcohol screenings
  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service
