Electrical Engineer, Substation - All Levels - Expression of Interest

Cordoba Corporation, a leading CA engineering and design firm is growing, and we are currently building a talent pool for some upcoming Electrical Engineer, Substation position. We are seeking multiple levels of Electrical Engineer experience to play a key role on our electrical engineering team. In this position, you will leverage your expertise to lead and contribute to various phases of substation design, analysis, and project execution.

Responsibilities

Electrical Engineer - Level 1

  • Assist senior engineers in the design and development of electrical substations, ensuring compliance with industry standards, codes, and safety regulations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including design, construction, and project management, to contribute to the successful execution of substation projects.
  • Participate in the preparation of technical specifications, drawings, and documentation for substation equipment, components, and systems.
  • Assist in conducting feasibility studies, load flow analyses, short-circuit studies, and other electrical simulations to ensure the reliability and efficiency of substation operations.
  • Support the evaluation and selection of substation equipment, such as transformers, circuit breakers, relays, and control systems.
  • Perform site visits to inspect and assess existing substations, identify potential issues, and recommend appropriate maintenance or upgrades.
  • Assist in the review of contractor submittals and ensure they adhere to project requirements and design specifications.
  • Learn and stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and advancements in substation design and operation.

Electrical Engineer - Level II

  • Works on substation design projects from concept through completion, ensuring adherence to project scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Conducts detailed technical analyses, including load flow, short-circuit, transient stability, and relay coordination studies, to ensure optimal substation performance and reliability.
  • Collaborates closely with interdisciplinary teams, including project managers, construction professionals, and external stakeholders, to achieve project goals and milestones.
  • Oversees the preparation of detailed substation design drawings, specifications, and technical documentation, ensuring compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Provides mentorship and guidance to junior engineers and technicians, fostering their professional growth and development.
  • Performs on-site visits to assess existing substations, troubleshoot technical issues, and provide recommendations for upgrades, maintenance, or improvements.
  • Interfaces with clients and stakeholders to understand their requirements, address technical inquiries, and provide effective solutions that meet project objectives.
  • Keeps abreast of industry advancements and emerging technologies, integrating innovative approaches into substation design and engineering practices.
  • Reviews contractor submittals, attend project meetings, and participate in technical reviews to ensure quality and accuracy of work.
  • Contributes to business development efforts by participating in proposal writing, client presentations, and identifying opportunities for project expansion.

Senior Electrical Engineer

  • Leads and participates in the design and development of electrical substations, ensuring compliance with industry standards, codes, and safety regulations.
  • Manages and oversees substation engineering projects from conception to completion, including scope definition, budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, and risk management.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams, including design, construction, and project management, to contribute to the successful execution of substation projects.
  • Provides technical expertise and guidance to substation design of technical specifications, drawings, and documentation for substation equipment, components, and systems.
  • Conducts feasibility studies, load flow analyses, short-circuit studies, and other electrical simulations to ensure the reliability and efficiency of substation operations.

Qualifications

Qualifications: Electrical Engineer - Level I

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Knowledge of power systems, electrical circuits, and substation fundamentals acquired through coursework, projects, or internships.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and codes such as IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, and IEC related to substation design and operation.
  • Proficiency in relevant software tools, including CAD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation) and electrical simulation software (ETAP, PSCAD, or similar).
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail for conducting technical studies and performing accurate calculations.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams and present technical information clearly.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and keeping up-to-date with advancements in substation engineering and related technologies.
  • Ability to work independently and manage tasks within deadlines.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree is a plus
  • Relay Engineer, Substation Physicals Engineer, Substation Civil Engineer knowledge/experience

Qualifications: Electrical Engineer - Level II

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • 5 years of experience in substation engineering, design, and project management
  • Proficiency in power systems analysis software (ETAP, PSCAD, PowerWorld, etc.) and familiarity with CAD tools (AutoCAD, MicroStation)
  • Strong understanding of industry standards (IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, IEC) and regulations pertaining to substation design and operation
  • Demonstrated expertise in conducting technical studies, calculations, and simulations related to substation performance and reliability
  • Effective leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to guide junior engineers and collaborate with diverse teams
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for interacting with clients, stakeholders, and project teams
  • Problem-solving orientation and the ability to make informed decisions under pressure
  • Proven project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously

Preferred:

  • Masters degree a plus
  • Relay Engineer, Substation Physicals Engineer, Substation Civil Engineer experience
  • San Diego area location

Salary Range: $72,800 to $145,600 (depending on experience)

Environment: Remote: San Diego area preferred
