Job Overview

The Director, Continuous Improvement at Macy’s Inc is a leader on the enterprise team focused on driving growth through innovation, unlocking process efficiencies to improve profitability, and facilitating the execution of critical business strategies supporting “The Bold New Chapter.” In this visible role, team members engage with C-suite, SVPs, and VPs across core retail functions on impactful projects, including:

  • Designing and facilitating ideation sessions to identify opportunities for incremental sales and customer acquisition.
  • Identifying ways to optimize operations and deliver efficiencies through process improvements.
  • Developing strategic execution plans and driving cross-functional implementation of enterprise initiatives.

In a rapidly evolving retail landscape, requiring extensive cross-functional collaboration to achieve business objectives, the Director plays a pivotal role in positioning Macy’s for both near and long-term success.

In this capacity, the Director serves as:

  • Customer Champion: Advocating for the customer by leveraging insights to enhance the customer experience and drive growth.
  • Enterprise Connector: Maintaining a curious mindset, challenging norms, and fostering open dialogue to uncover innovative opportunities.
  • Outsider-Insider: Staying informed about industry trends and applying market knowledge to innovate within the organization.
  • Structured Problem Solver: Applying a methodical approach to tackle complex problems, adapting as new insights emerge.
  • Storyteller: Crafting clear narratives for ideas and strategies, effectively communicating complex information.
  • Active Facilitator: Coordinating cross-functional collaboration to foster diverse perspectives and achieve optimal solutions.

Reporting to the VP of Continuous Improvement, the Director guides cross-functional teams in formulating and pursuing strategic priorities. They assess business challenges through various lenses—customer, competitor, financial—and develop data-driven recommendations to enhance execution. Additionally, the Director delivers compelling presentations to inform decision-making and propose solutions.

What You Will Do

  • Identify and lead large-scale, cross-functional projects, managing key stakeholders and partner with teams to drive execution of key enterprise initiatives.
  • Regularly receive exposure to the highest levels of the organization, working on projects directly for C-suite, SVPs and VPs.
  • Apply analytical rigor and creative problem-solving skills to strategic business problems.
  • Assess new / innovative concepts and approaches and develop an implementation plan.
  • Create structured solutions and frameworks to navigate ambiguous business problems.
  • Synthesize key insights and formulate actionable recommendations.
  • Establish trusting relationships with key stakeholders and influence across functions (without formal reporting lines).

Skills You Will Need

Communication Skills:

  • Expert Microsoft PowerPoint skills.
  • Moderate to strong Excel skills.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills (oral, written and listening) for a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to understand, organize and communicate complex information in an easily understandable format tailored to a variety of audiences.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced, goal-oriented, and time-sensitive environment.
  • Self-starter, curious, and keeps a pulse on market changes / new trends.
  • Experience developing holistic strategies through a structured, project-based approach.
  • Self-driven with ability to work independently with limited day-to-day guidance.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Strong proficiency with quantitative and analytical approaches.
  • Experience working with financial models and analyzing large data sets a plus.
  • Ability to translate data into strategic insights and compelling stories for senior leadership level materials.

Other Skills:

  • High-energy, passionate, with proven track record of delivering results.
  • Self-driven with ability to work independently with limited day-to-day guidance.

Who You Are

  • Dedicated to fulfilling ideals of diversity, inclusion, and respect that Macy’s aspires to achieve every day in every way.
  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply. MBA preferred.
  • 7-10 years of work experience, including at least 1-4 years with a top-tier strategy consulting firm, ideally with moderate to significant case experience in retail.
  • Experience developing holistic strategies through a structured, project-based approach. Experience leading cross-functional project teams and/or influencing without formal authority is a plus. Knowledge and interest in retail, strategy, and innovation.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
