About The Role

We seek a Sr. Manager, Staff & Labor Relations, who is passionate about maintaining positive relationships for The Leadership Conference and providing guidance and support to staff and leadership on various staff and labor relations matters. The People & Culture department is modernizing our functional areas to support diverse talent in carrying out the mission with impact, relevance & influence, streamline processes, build capacity, and cultivate staff engagement.

The Sr. Manager is responsible for conducting investigations, addressing staff complaints and grievances, ensuring company policies are followed, and promoting a healthy and productive work environment. They will also work closely with leadership to ensure that all staff members are treated fairly and equitably while upholding the Organizations’ values and vision. This Sr. Manager, Staff & Labor Relations, will report to the VP, People & Culture, and is not part of the collective bargaining unit.  

What You Will Do

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and support to leadership and staff on staff & labor relations issues such as performance feedback, discipline, and grievance procedures. Investigate, assess risk, and offer recommendations and solutions. Oversee the conflict resolution, disciplinary, and remediation process.
  • Guide departments regarding compliance with negotiated contract terms and labor regulations in the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Represent the Organizations and/or participate (in partnership with the VP, People & Culture) in labor relations meetings, the Labor Management Committee, and negotiations.
  • Partner with the leadership team and provide coaching and training to promote company culture, a positive work environment, and a positive staff experience. Foster a culture congruent with our mission, values, and competencies.
  • Serves as a role model and champion for staff engagement (annual pulse survey) and retention efforts and co-leads the Wellness, Happiness & Morale! (WHAM!) Committee.
  • Partner with People Operations to regularly review policies and practices to ensure they are effective and efficient and comply with relevant legislation and industry practices. Responsible for maintaining and updating the Staff Handbook and educating staff.
  • Collect, understand, and analyze data to provide insights to the Organizations and leadership on trends, strengths, and areas of improvement by proactively recommending programs and solutions to improve the staff experience.
  • Redesign and lead the offboarding process.
  • Perform other duties as necessary and related.

What You Will Bring

  • A minimum of 6 years of employee relations experience is required, and in nonprofits is preferred.
  • A Bachelor’s degree is required, and professional certification in HR management is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a variety of staff & labor relations matters with a high degree of professionalism, confidentiality, credibility, and diplomacy.
  • Takes a consultative style and approach with a proven ability to develop credible relationships while reaching evidence-based conclusions.
  • Strong leadership skills and a skilled consensus builder and communicator who can manage conflicts and challenges patiently and expertly.
  • Ability to remain diplomatic, calm, and persuasive in controversial and/or confrontational situations.
  • Experience as a self-starter with time-management and organizational skills who effectively manages multiple tasks, achieves results independently and possesses excellent writing and documentation skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent analytical skills and good reasoning abilities, and sound judgment. Adaptability to a constantly changing environment.
  • Thorough understanding of state and federal laws concerning staff & labor relations.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply the appropriate sections of applicable laws, guidelines, regulations, policies, and practices.
  • Maintain a lead-by-example approach related to ethics and compliance protocols.

Salary Range – $94,680 – $115,359, dependent on years of related experience.

Office Re-opening Statement

Currently, staff has the option to work from the office or home while we determine our long-term policy on remote and hybrid work. Please note this position is not permanently remote and over time the person filling this role may be required to work on occasion or regularly from the Washington, DC-based office.
