Role - Director, SRE

Summary

The Director, SRE for Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) will be a very visible, and highly impactful leader who will help stand up and mature a center of excellence dedicated to Site Reliability Engineering across Information Technology at Northern Trust. You will draw from ‘full-stack’ deep technical expertise and robust understanding of industry practice and business objectives to deliver strategic solutions. You will have a proven track record of success around best practices employed in establishing a transformational team focused on Reliability Engineering across the enterprise.

You will be responsible for building out our SRE practice across the enterprise globally. The global SRE team will have Business unit aligned resources as well as infrastructure aligned resources that will drive SRE practices across the firm. SRE will be responsible for ensuring systems are designed for a high degree of reliability and availability, as well as for driving remediation activities for high priority applications within their areas. The groups will be responsible for designing and implementing key patterns for infrastructure implementation in business applications that improve resiliency. The team will also contribute to complex incident and problem resolution. Finally you will also work with the technology learning and development on the delivery of training programs that increase SRE skills across the firm.

SRE is responsible for managing multiple functions, providing leadership and guidance to subordinate managers. Overall accountability for the performance management and career development programs for the Unit / functions.

Major Duties

  • Leverage operational, technical and strategic skill set to prioritize improvements needed in reliability.
  • Map out vision and roadmap for SRE, and how the organization can embrace the change that will be deployed.
  • Solution-oriented, adaptive thinker engaged in the hiring process and spearheading relationship building among collaborative partners
  • Responsible for overseeing the Site Reliability Engineers and the availability, automation, performance, efficiency, scaling, monitoring and emergency response of operating systems.
  • Encourage and lead Site Reliability Engineers to improve Service Level Objectives (SLO’s)
  • Oversees, plans and directs the activities for the Unit, ensuring that objectives are being met
  • Develops, implements and communicates an overall strategy to meet both the Unit's and Corporation's strategic plan. Directs the activities of those areas toward accomplishing those objectives
  • Assumes accountability for financial and staffing resources, including developing and managing capital and expense budgets, liaising cross-function to improve efficiency, effectiveness and productivity
  • Assumes full accountability for the performance and profitability of the area as compared to the plan
  • Responsible for managing multiple units or functions through the direct management of a group of managers

Knowledge/Skills

  • Minimum Bachelors (Master’s Degree preferred) in Computer Science, Information Systems or equivalent IT-related degree
  • Strong experience leading Infrastructure operations and development team in the financial services industry
  • Excellent listening and interpersonal skills along with the ability to communicate ideas in both technical and user-friendly language to stakeholders across the organization as well as clients
  • The ability through strong leadership to engage business and development teams in order to drive cultural change preferably in a matrixed environment
  • Knowledge of Software Development Lifecycle and prior experience working in an Agile environment.
  • Familiarity with SRE concepts and applicability in large, regulated Industries with various modern and legacy technology stacks
  • Experience with managing Technology stacks across the entire life cycle from provisioning, monitoring, capacity planning, performance management, automation etc.
  • Familiarity with coding best practices
  • Knowledge of technology strategy development is necessary to provide long term planning and to manage the profitability/performance of a major segment. Leadership and organizational skills are required to direct the activities for the multiple units.

Experience Required

  • Extensive management experience working in a global technology environment
  • Minimum Bachelors (Master’s Degree preferred) in Computer Science, Information Systems or equivalent IT-related degree.
  • Minimum 10 years of related experience
