Archaeologist

We are seeking an experienced Archaeologist to join our team in the Greater St. Louis area. This role can be based out of St. Louis, St. Charles, Edwardsville, or Belleville, and will serve as part of our Environmental Services team. The selected candidate will contribute to a variety of projects including Section 106 evaluations and cultural resources investigations in Missouri and Illinois. Duties will include Phase 1 survey, Phase II testing, archaeological monitoring, and Phase III data recovery as needed along with appropriate research and report development. Assistance with historic architectural survey may also be required. In this position, the candidate will:


  • Prepare Section 106 documents, historic contexts, reports, and other project documents.
  • Perform archival and background research to gather historical information about sites, structures, or artifacts.
  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and conducting cultural resources work, including archaeological fieldwork. May assign tasks to and coordinate work with junior staff
  • Assist in the preparation of project proposals, budgets, and timelines, and assists with scoping and fee development, as assigned
  • Conduct and/or lead on-site surveys and/or excavations to identify and document archaeological or historical sites
  • Conduct GIS analysis and mapping.
  • Assist with developing recommendations to mitigate potential impacts on cultural resources
  • Assist with public involvement and other meetings as needed
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and procedures
  • May perform other duties associated with the position.




Qualifications for this role:


  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree anthropology or a closely related field
  • 5 years of experience in archaeological studies and fieldwork, or closely related experience
  • Demonstrated organization and task management skills
  • Familiarity with project scheduling software and tools
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant cultural resources principles, practices, and regulations, including Section 106 review process
  • Proficiency with GIS and mapping systems
  • Proficiency with historical maps, photographs, property records, and other archival materials
  • Ability to coordinate, lead, and perform fieldwork in various conditions, lift and carry equipment, use relevant tools, and navigate outdoor terrain
  • Strong written and verbal communication, research, report writing, and documentation skills
  • Commitment to ethical conduct, environmental stewardship, and compliance with regulations
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Valid driver’s license.




Additional qualifications that are helpful:


  • Registered Professional Archaeologist
  • Understanding of each of the SOI’s Standards related to archaeology and the ability to apply them to various cultural resources scenarios
  • General knowledge of architectural design, construction detailing, construction procedures, as well as building materials and systems with a familiarity on historic methodology
  • Experience working on tasks related to the National Historic Preservation Act, its implementing regulations, and, particularly, the Section 106 review process.
  • A general understanding of the application of the Section 106 process as it relates to the development of State Department of Transportation (DOT) projects, specifically in Illinois and/or Missouri
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Collector
