About Thompson Creek Mine

The Thompson Creek Mine is a primary, surface molybdenum mine and mill located approximately 48 kilometers southwest of the town of Challis in Idaho's Custer County.

In operations since 1983, the mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods with large electric-powered shovels that can each move up to 100,000 tons of waste rock and ore per day.

Thompson Creek Mine promotes a drug and alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a zero-tolerance policy with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs on site.

About The Opportunity

We are looking for an Chief Engineer, Mine to join our Thompson Creek team. The Chief Mine Engineer will provide strategic long- and short-term planning and mine design. Effectively manage the mining engineering, surveying and geotechnical teams ensuring quality delivery of plans and schedules in a timely manner in line with plans and budgets.

Your Responsibilities Include, But Not Limited To

  • Ensure open pit optimization and designs are completed to Company standards and requirements and that long- and short-term planning is commensurate with corporate objectives.
  • Serve as technical advisor to Mine Manager, assist with preparation of the annual mine budget and life of mine plan, coordinate and incorporate inputs from various section e.g. geology, geotechnical engineering, mine operations survey, into the production schedules and designs; review regularly life of mine defining strategies to endure that the stated corporate objectives are achieved.
  • Supervise the mining engineers in compilation of production data and reporting, manage the succession planning of departmental engineers to ensure the development of employees.
  • Be proactive in all aspects of operation safety, efficient utilization of resources, continuous improvement initiatives and encourage teamwork across the department.
  • Develop high level of communication with all departments and commitment to continuously improving current procedures.
  • Must possess exceptional interpersonal, organizational and communication skills necessary to maintain credibility with senior operations management and government officials.
  • Must possess and demonstrate strong leadership skills and maturity necessary to manage and motivate subordinates and influence peers.
  • Knowledge of open pit optimization, pit design and production scheduling along with the use of mine software packages is required.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Displays original thinking and creativity, meets challenges with resourcefulness, generates suggestions for improving work, develops innovative approaches and ideas, presents ideas and information in a manner that gets others' attention.
  • Other duties as assigned.

About You

To qualify, the following skills and experiences are required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering or a closely related field with ten plus years related experience desirable.
  • Advanced user of mine planning software (Deswik preferred).
  • Experience in open pit metal mine planning.
  • Experience in Drill and Blast.
  • Experience supervising degreed professional engineers is desirable.
  • Experience with Geotechnical and slope stability systems desirable.
  • Experience in mine dewatering operations desirable.
