ATTENTION LIFEGUARDS! The City of Emeryville's Community Services Department is seeking qualified Lifeguards to perform lifeguard duties at the Emeryville Community Pool. Hours may include afternoons and weekends.
Examples of Duties
Under general supervision, Lifeguards are responsible for maintaining the safety of all patrons at the Emeryville Center for Community Life Swim Center facility and for enforcing all policies and procedures and safety regulations related to the operation of the facility. Duties include recognizing and responding effectively to emergencies, inspecting the facility on a daily schedule, reporting any unsafe conditions or equipment to the supervisor, and performing other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience that will likely produce the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the positions is qualifying. A typical way of qualifying: must be currently enrolled in or graduated from an educational institution working towards a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
All individuals appointed to this position who are under the age of 18 and have not graduated from high school will be required to obtain a work permit by the date of new hire orientation. Ability to complete on-the-job lifeguard training is required (continued employment is contingent upon completing the training).
Must be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding or another nationally recognized Lifeguarding certification (i.e., YMCA, Ellis & Associates, Starguard).
Special Requirements
Eyesight sufficient to read data, memos, spreadsheets, vouchers, computer screens; manual dexterity to operate a personal computer, copy machine; ability to sit for extended periods; climb balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; verbal and hearing skills to communicate effectively with children and other staff; visual acuity to oversee projects, and make observations. Potential for exposure to blood-borne pathogens when rendering first aid. Slip hazards when working near water.

- Must be at least 15 years of age at the time of appointment.
- This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evening, holidays, and weekends.
- As a condition of employment, incumbents must pass a background check and will be required to be fingerprinted in accordance with State of California law.
- Knowledgeable in the use and care of lifesaving equipment at a public swimming facility. Knowledgeable of First Aid and CPR techniques.
- Knowledgeable of the rules and regulations of an aquatic facility Able to swim with proficiency and endurance.
- Able to follow oral and written instructions.
- Able to demonstrate lifesaving and emergency first aid skills. Able to fairly and uniformly enforce pool regulations.
- Able to work cooperatively with the public and employees in an enthusiastic and cooperative manner.
