We are seeking a Chief Optical Engineer in our Broomfield, CO Location or hybrid potential. Quantinuum believes that employees work better, more efficiently and more collaboratively in close proximity to other employees, where ideas can be exchanged readily, and decisions can be made more quickly for the benefit of the Company and our customers. All employees should work at their assigned location; however, this role may offer the opportunity to work remotely, with approvals.

The Chief Optical Engineer will report into the Technology Development organization responsible for delivering novel subsystems necessary for scaling trapped-ion quantum computers. The role will be focused on optical technologies -- from free-space to micro-optics and photonic integrated circuits, and from lasers to detectors. The Chief will partner with the Sr. Manager of Optics to improve and mature our optical development activities, as well as to seek and win externally funded programs that advance our technology roadmap.

This is a role with no direct-reporting employees, but with a strong expectation to help lead and mentor by influence. The successful candidate will have deep experience driving continuous improvement by establishing inspirational goals and showing the benefits, developing winning strategies and proposals, and delivering effective mentoring.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instill and mature optical science and engineering best-practices; inculcate these within the optics team and more broadly
  • With optical leadership and cross-technical SMEs, translate optical requirements into a technology development roadmap; identify resource needs and work with line managers to [SP1] [SS2] propose gap-closure plans
  • Pursue and win funded development programs in the areas of photonic integrated circuits and lasers
  • Mentor and counsel early-career scientists and engineers
  • Advise and partner with management to maximize technical-team morale, engagement, productivity, and job satisfaction

YOU MUST HAVE:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 10 or more years of post-graduate experience engineering high-technology systems
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in one or more areas of: lens/lens-system design, photonic integration and/or atomic spectroscopy
  • Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. Citizen, permanent resident or green card holder

WE VALUE:

  • Advanced degree -- Masters or PhD -- in Optical Science, Physics, Engineering, or related technical field preferred
  • Proven track record in winning and delivering upon funded development programs
  • Strong understanding of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology
  • Experience winning and executing on PIC development programs
  • Strong organizational & leadership skills
  • Experience and familiarity with atomic physics
  • Written and verbal communication skills commensurate with delivering a message at the business leadership level
  • Temperament: a cool, even-keeled approach that keeps the conversation productive even in times of pressure and change

Compensation & Benefits:
