We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Technology CIO Function Mgmt

In this role, you will:

Country / Tech Centre leadership:

  • The Technology Centre Head for India for WPB Tech is the globally accountable (entity) head for WPB staff based in the region. This team is now c. 4000 (c. 2000 perm) people and represents c.40% of WPB Tech headcount globally. The Centre Head needs to build a strong relationship with the global CIO/CTOs to build a cohesive India leadership team that complements the matrix organization:
  • Leading Tech Centre & Global Tech Strategy Initiatives
  • Working with all stakeholders to make HSBC/HTI a great employer of Choice
  • Communicating effectively with respective Orgs on HSBC/HTI Level Policies / Guidelines and managing employee sentiment
  • Ensuring a high standard of operational effectiveness (Global/HTI/OpCo Metrics)
  • Building a world class Engineering Team in HTI

Leadership & Teamwork:

  • Partner with Global WPB CIOs for providing in-country oversight and co-ordination for all Tech Services, managing resources from multiple Technology disciplines and service lines
  • Provide in-country management and oversight of all local execution and change portfolios
  • Lead the local service line leads in India to build a strong, cohesive regional leadership team to execute on global WPB strategy
  • Participate in WPB XLT (extended leadership team) and be a role model for other leaders in the region
  • Provide Regional leadership of IT personnel for people-related issues, providing a local duty of care
  • Support the WPB Tech global leadership team in delivering the WPB Engineering Strategy by managing the Engineering Teams for application development, remediation, and service
  • Lead and develop the WPB Tech Team in India making sustainable decisions that protects and enhances HSBC’s values, reputation, and stakeholder value. Actively encourages a learning culture. Authentically engages a diverse group of stakeholders internally and externally to influence the achievement of best outcomes for all stakeholders
  • Promote technology sharing and leverage operating environments to achieve greater cost efficiency
  • Builds rapport and mutual understanding to communicate and create opportunities for cross-business and/or international working, encouraging debate and open discussion. Encourages people to build sustainable relationships beyond transactional levels and use empathy and insight to build better understanding of mutual benefits
  • Advanced coach / mentor contributing to the establishment of good coaching and mentoring practices. Demonstrate alternative techniques for diagnosing issues and coaching individuals and teams
  • Collaborate with other Value Streams/Services lines in India to improve overall Engineering Practices in India and Learn from one another.

Functional Knowledge:

  • Align to Tech Strategy: The lead should be fully aware of the technology architecture and design principles to drive effective and efficient delivery across WPB Tech and engineering practices in the India Technology Centre
  • Drive delivery of large change programs and transformation of legacy technology to modern architectures and help the global CIOs in driving WPB cloud adoption strategy
  • Ensure the highest standards and continuing the transformation of engineering disciplines and capabilities across WPB Tech
  • Transition to Net Zero: Sustainable software engineering – champion and build a sustainable mindset towards the way we deliver technology solutions
  • Responsible for building and nurturing a world-class engineering practice capability to attract, develop and retain engineering talent. Champion the adoption of leading-edge software development practices with a culture of continuous improvement
  • Maintain a business value-led, focus on the customer, forward-looking mindset on new and emerging technologies in to guide and advise on timely and practical adoption

Operational Effectiveness:

  • Resource demand: Work with Global CIOs in effectively managing the resources in the India Tech Centre
  • Vendor management: Proactively managing attrition for both perm and non-perm staff and building a culture of recognition to increase retention across all service lines. Primary accountability for GSVs and PSLs and regular partnership and liaison with vendors on platforms and products under India Tech Centre remit
  • Headcount & Hiring: Responsible for direct cost, headcount management, and annual planning for country teams. Execute the WPB location & time zone strategy for strategic workforce planning aligned to demand
  • Ensure ways of working and hybrid working are aligned to our strategy and current priorities
  • Build a diverse and innovative team in India and an active community for the future
  • Resolve day-to-day HR issues not suited to a cross-border manager
  • Provide local HR, support teams with guidance on IT needs when defining policies, e.g. local compensation policies, approach to recruitment, on-boarding
  • Accountable for IJP (internal job posting) process, promotions at year end and throughout the year
  • Responsible for India Pay, managing counter offers and exits
  • Ensure HTI Pune is recognized as a great place to work internally and externally – ensure wellbeing and work/life balance are top of the agenda

  • Develop external relationships with academia/industry/start up ecosystem and drive innovation (e.g. hackathons) and make HTI a world class innovation capability within HSBC
  • Operational governance: contribute to the India leaderboard on snapshot, fusion claims and all administrative issues

  • Champion all streams of Tech Strategy in India and WPB OKRs to drive the whole India team to achieve our strategic goals to become safer, faster and simpler
  • Regularly communicate to HTI staff through town halls and other channels
  • The job holder to collaborate with peers in ITID, WPB IT, and DBS partners, to ensure delivery of business and IT goals
  • Transformation: Ensure that HTI transformation initiatives are implemented across the Pune and other sites ensuring the tech center India is world class
  • Work with service line leads to empower them on SOW decisions
  • Attend relevant region/country COO chaired governance committees, engaging in and managing key Technology topics
  • Support the Technology India CIO in maintenance of relevant government, regulatory and Board relationships

Management of Risk (Operational Risk / FIM requirements):

  • Risk & Compliance: Oversight over the risk and compliance position of HTI Pune including ensuring the site is fit for purpose and is compliant with all the policies and controls
  • Create an environment which anticipates risk, ensuring action is taken to quantify and mitigate
  • Govern risk responsibly. Promote ethical management of risk across regions and business areas within their teams. Communicate changes in policy and governance effectively, reinforcing risk processes within their team
  • Manage department finances. Accurately interpret strategic financial information, make insightful decisions in financial planning and programme performance monitoring. Identify and highlight financial implications of risks/ issues, involves stakeholders and manages budget variation as appropriate.

Observation of Internal Controls (Compliance Policy / FIM requirements):

  • Implement IT best practice in risk policies and governance frameworks in area of responsibility
  • Build plans and budgets which identify value and cost reduction opportunities
  • Ensure reconciliations of expenditure against completed work and benefits realisation; recommends how to tackle any variance
  • Lead a customer-centric culture, championing activities that encourage outstanding customer advocacy. Proactively seek opportunities to utilise IT services to improve a business operation.
  • Manage external relations for IT with the local regulator(s) and industry bodies.
  • Oversee compliance with local laws, regulations and global standards.
  • Provide local coordination and oversight of all in-country IT activities being driven by GB / GF IT and Global IT horizontals.
  • Coordinate IT initiatives and activities being implemented in the country
  • Manage in-country IT personnel and services including support for regional and local languages, region and country-specific technology
  • Identify, manage, and resolve conflicts directly whilst maintaining alignment to overall direction provided by the respective GB/GF IT and Global IT Horizontal teams.
  • Manage IT cost allocation to appropriate GB /GF IT, Global IT horizontal cost centres
  • Deliver fair outcomes for our customers and ensure own conduct maintains the orderly and transparent operation of financial markets.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you should meet the following requirements:

  • Experienced senior technology executive with a proven track record of delivering complex global solutions and deployment in regions and markets in demanding timeframes
  • Experience of managing large Teams in Global Tech Centres
  • Experience of running multi-project, multi-stakeholder programmes in a global organization
  • BSc Software Engineering or Computer Science Degree from a recognised university is a must
  • In the region of 20 years’ technical experience working within a major technology orientated organisation with experience of being successful in a matrix organisation with multiple stakeholders
  • Outstanding inter-personal and communication skills. Able to operate at very senior levels of the Group
  • Proven experience in delivering business transformation through technology solutions
  • Strong knowledge of technology architecture and data integration technologies
  • Excellent understanding of software development methodologies such as SDLC, Agile, DevOps
  • Demonstrable deep technical knowledge of the software engineering domain from current/recent practical experience
  • Financial acumen with a strong understanding of business accounting and reporting requirements
  • Very strong technology background with an understanding of emerging technology trends
  • Proven people and project management skills in global cross-cultural environment
  • Demonstrable ability to work in a collegiate fashion across the matrix, demonstrating constructive pragmatism and delivery focus
  • Deep understanding of customer facing technology and propositions
