Job Purpose

  • To Plan, direct and monitor the Operation and Maintenance activities of Energy Centre to ensure uninterrupted and desired quality steam and power supply to Process to optimize and to achieve their production within targeted cost and quality parameters.
  • To explore plant up gradation possibility in environment aspect, cost aspect, quality aspect and reliability aspect for long term sustainability.
  • To plan and execute the identified major and minor projects & CAPEXs.
  • Talent Development within the department.
  • To Ensure Safe Working Environment and implementation of best safety practices.
  • To liaison for all the boilers in the Unit for Indian Boilers Regulations with Boiler Inspectorate.
  • To co-ordinate with respective Electrical & Instrument sections in day-to-day activities.
  • To plan and control Coal & Ash Management activities.

Job Context & Major Challenges

Job Context

Birla Cellulosic is a Green Field Project of Grasim Industries Ltd. conceptualized in the year 1994 and was fully commissioned in 1998. Later on in the year 2008, Unit has expanded its production lines from two to four through brown field project. The Unit has an installed capacity of 350 TPD of Viscose Staple Fibre and is one of the modern Viscose Staple Fibre producing unit of Grasim's Pulp & Fibre Business, with its four manufacturing streams of Viscose Staple Fibre, 263 TPD Sodium Sulphate Plant, 59 TPD Carbon di Sulphide (CS2) Plant, 400 TPD of Sulphuric Acid Plant, 40 MW (2x15 MW 1x10 MW) Captive Thermal Power Plant and other auxiliary plants like Water Treatment, Demineralization & Effluent Treatment Plant etc.

The technology of producing Viscose Staple Fiber is of continuous nature. The viscose is produced from dissolving grade pulp, which is a product of certain selected species of wood. The viscose has got a typical characteristic to coagulate if heated or kept for a longer period without movement. Even slightest fluctuation and/or interruption of power, not only results in heavy production loss but also in heavy deterioration in viscose quality and thus in final product. The job has got great accountability of operating & maintaining the plant so as to supply uninterrupted power & steam at all the time.

Other Major Challenges

  • To manage plant operations for fluctuating levels of load requirement with consistent steam and power parameters
  • Plant Availability: To achieve 100% availability of all equipment for operation.
  • Decision making for resolving critical issues related with trouble shooting of critical equipment like Boilers, Turbines, CHP, AHP & other Auxiliaries.

  • Translating the overall goals set by higher management in to departmental objectives and ensure implementation - Review customer complaints and take relevant corrective actions - Identifying new projects/schemes.

  • Ensuring optimum plant availability by coordinating preventive/breakdown maintenance work and Implementation of development schemes.
  • Identify requirements of internal customers and thus monitor plant operation for enhanced Internal Customer Satisfaction.
  • To identify the bottleneck and support the Operation & Maintenance System to ensure timely delivery.

KRA5 Innovation 1.Upgrading the plant through modernization and technological inputs.

  • Initiating new schemes for increasing organization profitability.

KRA6 WCM & ISO 1.Facilitating and implementing WCM and ISO Standards.

  • Developing systems for upgrading Plant operations to meet WCM and ISO requirements.
  • Expanding WCM concepts to make it sustainable.

KRA7 Safety 1.Develop system and ensure implementation of safe working condition and to achieve the Environmental Standard.

  • Standardizing and facilitating safe practices in SOP.
  • Monitor lapses and implementation of corrective action against unsafe condition.
  • Standardizing and facilitating optimum parameters to control plant operation to meet all the environment standards.

KRA8 Customer Satisfaction 1.Understanding customer requirements and translate them into actions at plant levels.

  • Visiting customers to understand their needs.

KRA9 People Development 1.Identify the skill gaps among staff and technicians for effective plant operation.
