The Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition (AHTCC) is seeking a Vice President, External Affairs to increase the capacity of our growing organization to build relationships and engage with key policymakers and stakeholders in support of our mission to advocate for the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (Housing Credit).


The ideal candidate for this position will be an experienced professional with a background in affordable housing and congressional and government relations who brings existing relationships and knowledge to the role. With the forthcoming election and major tax legislation that will impact the Housing Credit in the near future, the AHTCC is looking for a candidate who can begin making an impact on day one. The AHTCC also maintains a strong commitment to bipartisanship and is looking for a candidate who shares this commitment and can work across the aisle.


The AHTCC maintains a flexible, hybrid work schedule. The Vice President, of External Affairs will be expected to report to the AHTCC office one to two days per week, in addition to regularly attending meetings in Washington, DC, and traveling to conferences and events.


The position will be a full-time position with benefits. The Vice President, of External Affairs, will report to the CEO and work closely with the AHTCC team, including the external government affairs firm.

 

About the AHTCC

The AHTCC is a trade organization of housing professionals who advocate for the Housing Credit–the nation’s primary tool to finance affordable rental housing – and has been at the forefront of efforts to protect and strengthen the program since the AHTCC’s founding in 1988. In the year ahead we are focused on legislative and regulatory advocacy to further expand and strengthen the Housing Credit, working with Congress and the Administration.


Our nearly 270 member organizations—including syndicators, investors, lenders, developers, legal and accounting professionals, state and public agencies, and coalitions—have supported the provision of more than half of the over 3.8 million affordable homes financed by the Housing Credit across the country.

 

Responsibilities will include:

  • Building and maintaining relationships with key policymakers and stakeholders, including members of Congress, congressional staff, and members of the Administration.
  • Participating in regular congressional meetings and outreach on behalf of the AHTCC’s priorities and attending events on behalf of the Affordable Housing PAC – the first PAC dedicated exclusively to promoting the Housing Credit, which was launched in 2023.
  • Attending affordable housing industry events on behalf of the AHTCC and articulating AHTCC priorities and relevant updates.
  • Supporting the development and execution of the AHTCC’s legislative and regulatory strategy.
  • Providing updates to AHTCC members on legislative and regulatory developments.
  • Engaging with AHTCC members to understand policy concerns and develop policy positions on issues impacting the Housing Credit.
  • Helping to plan and support AHTCC events, including three in-person conferences per year and webinars, which include participation by elected officials and policymakers.

 

Requirements:

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred.
  • 7- 10 years of experience working in affordable housing policy or pertinent policy or government relations roles.
  • An understanding of the key dynamics and stakeholders influencing affordable housing policy and the ability to think strategically about how to best position the AHTCC’s priorities.
  • A proven track record of relationship building and management with a wide range of stakeholders; relationships with key policymakers preferred, for example, the Senate Finance and Banking Committees, the House Ways and Means and Financial Services Committees, the White House, Treasury Department, Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Federal Housing Finance Agency.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and professionalism.
  • An ability to represent the AHTCC and its priorities at internal and external events.
  • Residence in the Washington, DC, area, with the ability to work remotely as well as to attend in-person meetings and events.
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and organized.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
  • Commitment to the mission of protecting, expanding, and strengthening the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit.
