About the Role:

The Exploration and Development - New Ventures team is seeking to a Principal Geoscientist with strong experience in geologic evaluation ranging from play analysis to prospect maturation and a track record of generating successful opportunities. The role is based in Houston, TX.


As a member of the New Ventures team, you will be responsible for leading technical evaluations and recommending opportunities for capture. The work will require an ability to integrate all elements of the petroleum system, working from the plate scale to the prospect scale. Emphasis placed on well-rounded candidates capable of generating and evaluating play concepts and guiding the integration of charge, reservoir and structural products for consistent volume and risk evaluation.


The New Ventures team sits within the Exploration and Development division in Woodside Energy. Exploration and Development’s mandate is to capture/characterize/mature oil and gas opportunities, frame and execute resource appraisal plans that reduce resource uncertainty and identify the preferred development concept.


Skills & Experience:

The successful candidate should have the following qualifications/attributes:


  • A proven professional with 10 years of experience working as an exploration geoscientist. Preference for individuals with New Ventures experience, deep expertise in play evaluation, and a track record of successfully capturing exploration licenses and/or generating prospects that have resulted in commercial success. Experience maturing and drilling captured opportunities is a plus.
  • Demonstrate ability to work from plate through regional to prospect scale; integrating structural, stratigraphic, geochemical, and geophysical data to describe basin evolution and generate play maps.
  • Well-grounded in concepts of prospect generation, and prospect risk and volumetric assessments.
  • Strong seismic interpretation skills.
  • Proficiency in seismic interpretation software such as Petrel or DSG.
  • Skilled application of GeoX software for volumetric modelling.
  • Working knowledge across many different basins and tectonic settings is preferred.
  • Possess the commercial acumen to be able to justify recommendations on data purchases, farm-in opportunities, and bid round participation.
  • Has the ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced, challenging environment. The ideal candidate has the technical and interpersonal skills to influence across organization and will serve as an interface with stakeholder groups within Woodside.
  • Provide mentorship and coaching to less experienced team members.
  • Developed communication skills to exchange complex information.
