Exercise Physiologist

Coordinates all aspects of the Outpatient Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program (Phases II and III) including exercise prescription, exercise leadership and education. Assist with Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program Phase I as needed. Education

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Exercise Physiology required.

Licensure/Certification/Registry

  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Certification through ACSM as an Exercise Specialist preferred.
  • ACLS preferred.

Experience

  • Experience in exercise program planning, supervision, and counseling with cardiovascular and pulmonary patients required.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Member of professional organization desirable.
  • Competent in EKG interpretation.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills
  • Universal Precautions Category I.

Responsibilities

  • Assist inpatients with activity progression as ordered. Collaborates with RNs regarding adverse patient response to activity.
  • Coordinates the activities of Phase II and III outpatient cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation including, but not limited to day-to-day management, completing monthly Medicare forms, compiling monthly department stats, assuring adequate supply inventory, researching new equipment purchases, ensuring compliance with CMS and AACVPR requirements
  • Performs initial evaluation to assess cardiac risk factors, assess patients’ current exercise capacity and develops exercise prescriptions.
  • Collaborates with patients to develop exercise plan and personal risk factor management goals related to disease process. Re-evaluates goals and plan based on changes in patient's status.

    • Evaluate patients’ physical barriers/needs related to exercise and provide guidance for alternative exercise options to improve patients’ physical functions and exercise capacity.
    • Collaborates with RN regarding patients’ medical issues.
    • Leads supervised exercise sessions and provides training on daily rehab routine, proper use of equipment and proper exercise techniques.
    • Provides individualized exercise therapy using appropriate modalities in order to progress toward established goals. Monitors responses to interventions using physical assessment and signs/symptoms. Provides education and support for risk factor modification. Reinforces as necessary. Documents as required.
    • Provides ongoing reassessment of exercise capacity and updating exercise prescriptions.
    • Observes, records and reports to referring physician treatment plan and response to interventions.
    • Provides guidance for home exercise program and selection of home exercise equipment.
    • Assists with emergency care according to department policy.
    • Participates in the development and implementation of special projects, new programs and community sponsored events.
    • Conducts and modifies as necessary educational programs for patients and staff.
    • Participates in professional continuing education.
    • Supervises and educates student interns.
    • Maintains effective communication with patient, family members, physicians, hospital staff and the public.
    • Monitors cleanliness and maintenance of equipment and reports any deficiencies.
    • Participates in community health screenings and educational events.
    • Participates in QI activities of the department as needed.
    • Helps coordinate and promote the transition of patients to the Phase III program.
    • Adheres to behavioral standards.
    • Performs other related work as required or requested.
