About Our Opportunity

We are seeking a safety minded team member with an attention to detail for Controls Specialist position on our Maintenance Team in our fast paced, manufacturing facility located in Montoursville, PA. The Controls Specialist position develops hardware and software configurations for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s), conventional and Servo Drives, and Machine monitoring and control systems. Performs skilled electrical / instrumentation installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair work related to equipment controls, computer systems or networks, to support printing and manufacturing operations.


Responsibilities

  • Design and implement new control systems to support the facility operations.
  • Create and modify software related code (PLC, HMI, VFD, etc.)
  • Create and execute process risk assessments, testings and validations.
  • Develop specifications and standards for new and existing control systems.
  • Assist Engineering and Maintenance Staff as required with control system related issues.
  • Participate on Project Teams and provide up to date information regarding project status.
  • Installing, programming, calibrating, and commissioning various electrical/instrumentation devices including variable frequency drives, servo drives, radios, machine monitoring systems, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
  • Develop electrical and electronic system designs, plans, specifications, wiring schematics, and basic one-line diagrams; assisting in the start up, commissioning, and troubleshooting of the process control system including correcting problems with communications, field process variables, or design engineering
  • Coordinate and acquire materials and equipment to repair or install at facilities; acting as technical lead in regard to controls
  • Present ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing, to share acquired knowledge, negotiate outcomes, discuss alternatives, and address problem/conflict situations.
  • Communicate and coordinate work activities with other work units to ensure timely completion of projects, repairs and maintenance.
  • Uses various power tools to repair electronic/electrical controls and instruments, and installs electronic telemetering devices, ultrasonic sensors, sequential controls, alarms, and digital computer interfaces. Tests and calibrates electronic equipment.
  • Uses laptop computer to troubleshoot, document, modify, or correct programs for PLC’s, radios, etc. Documents new installations and modifications on instrumentation.
  • Diagnoses and repairs equipment failures and malfunctions utilizing schematic diagrams and test equipment.
  • Read schematics and blueprints to trace complex electronic and electrical circuits.
  • Operate a personal computer (PC), and uses software (e.g., word processing, databases, spreadsheets, graphics packages, and emulation, etc.) to prepare detailed and technical reports for use by others including management, engineering, and departmental employees.
  • Complete daily reports of all work performed.
  • Complete daily reports of all parts consumed in performing maintenance, repairs, requests, and projects.
  • Recommend measures to improve the departmental production/maintenance program.
  • Assist as needed in general warehouse operations and upkeep of property to maintain facility and projects. (RF Inventory Systems)
  • Train and develop other maintenance staff
  • Exhibit a professional manner in dealing with others and work to maintain constructive working relationships.
  • A commitment to company wide quality and safety is required.
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned.


Qualifications

  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Fluent in programming of PLCs, HMIs and computer systems
  • Thorough understanding of automation regarding electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic control systems desired
  • Familiar with troubleshooting control systems
  • Ability to create electrical schematic prints for new or existing equipment utilizing industry standard
  • Thorough understanding of OSHA, NEC, API requirements and ensuring these requirements are reflected in designs and programming
  • Ability to take projects from concept to completion
  • Ability to comprehend drawings, equipment manuals, documents, etc. and to apply knowledge and skills necessary to maintain equipment and facilities efficiently.
  • Ability to program ladder and IEC 1131 languages (a culmination of five program languages)
  • Ability to install configure and commission variable frequency drives, servo drives, PLCs and other control systems
  • Proficient in the operation of all types of equipment in the facility.
  • Ability to communicate with management and coworkers in order to meet departmental goals.
  • Ability to work independently with little direction in a fast paced distribution environment.
  • Knowledge of operating systems and protocols that are used in the printing and manufacturing operations of Unique Industries
  • Bachelor’s Degree: BS in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or related field, advanced degree preferred. Associate’s Degree in Electrical, Electronics, or related field a minimum requirement. Experience and certification will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of 2 years related work experience with ideally 10 years of experience.
  • Experience with Allen Bradley preferred and additional experience with other controls systems a plus
  • Experience in the instrumentation field involving the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of electronics solid-state controls, instrumentation, data communications, and related equipment.
