Title: Animal Health Veterinary Technician Internship

Reports to: Senior Veterinary Technician

Overview:

The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is hosting an internship program for graduates of an accredited veterinary technician program that are interested in pursuing a career in the zoo field. The veterinary technician internship will provide extensive hands-on training, from a highly respected veterinary team, on a wide variety of exotic species.

The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is an AZA accredited facility that is home to over 2000 animals. The hospital team consists of full-time veterinarians, veterinary technicians, animal keepers, and a hospital manager. In addition to the hospital team, the Animal Health Department encompasses the Animal Nutrition Center.

Skills, Experiences, and Duties:

Under the supervision and direction of the veterinary staff, Veterinary Technician Interns will participate in all aspects of the veterinary department including but not limited to:

  • Preventative, diagnostic, and surgical immobilizations: set up, take down, ultrasound, radiology, collecting samples, and giving treatments
  • Anesthetic monitoring
  • Lab work: blood work, fecal exams, cytology, urinalysis, and outside lab preparation
  • Post mortem exams
  • Hospital maintenance: cleaning, equipment servicing and maintenance, stocking, and inventory
  • Medical records: filing, entering data, and organizing
  • Provide husbandry care for hospitalized animals
  • Assist with animal restraint and performing medical treatments


Duration of the program:

Interns are scheduled to work 40 hours per week and each internship runs for a minimum of 6 weeks with the option to extend if available (open to some negotiation).

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Candidates must be graduates of an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology program, with preference given to Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVT’s).
  • Preferred Applicants should have at least 1-year experience as a licensed technician in a veterinary practice and a working knowledge of veterinary principles; anatomy, pharmacology, parasitology, hematology, radiology, anesthesiology, urinalysis, clinical, and surgical techniques.
  • Candidates should be self-motivated, able to work well alone and with others, and willing to learn new skills and make the most of the internship experience.
  • Candidates must be able to lift 50 lbs., climb in and out of truck beds, remain bending/standing/stooping for long periods of time, and work in adverse weather conditions.


Physical requirements:

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to walk, bend, kneel and crawl.
  • Able to lift and carry 50 pounds without difficulty.
  • Ability to traverse zoo grounds on foot and operate a motorized golf cart.
