Job Description

RMI is seeking a social media creator and strategist to support the execution and creation of social media and related marketing content. Focusing on RMI’s work to spur the clean-energy transition across the Global South, this role will focus on our work in Africa, the Caribbean, Pacific Islands, and Southeast Asia. Around the world, RMI works to reduce barriers to the energy transition and implement climate solutions at scale. Through social media and strategic communications, we inspire action to make this vision a reality. This role will advance these goals by engaging with key audiences and stakeholders -- such as policymakers, media, corporate partners, and the public – via diverse digital channels.

  

This hybrid role focuses mainly on executing social media content and strategy, in alignment with RMI’s wider brand and strategic goals, to engage and grow key audiences globally. As a related responsibility, the successful candidate will also act as a strategic communications specialist, working with project managers to set communications strategy, produce and deliver team-produced content – such as articles, reports, and media placements -- that elevates the impact, research, and other work of subject matter experts of our Global South team.

Our ideal candidate is multi-talented, able to both think strategically and create content enthusiastically. In the social domain, they are highly creative and will help RMI’s Global South team grow its reach across LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, via paid and organic media. They have a knack for finding stories that capture RMI’s successes and bring them to life in ways that fit RMI’s brand voice, tailored by channel to appeal to our diverse audiences. They can translate complex climate and energy subject matter into accessible content and can spot emerging social media trends and test them with a growth mindset.



An ideal candidate will have a passion for social media, storytelling, and RMI’s mission to decarbonize the world’s energy system. This position reports directly to the social media manager, with a dotted-line relationship to the Global South strategic communications senior manager. They will also work closely with the media relations, editorial, design, marketing and audience teams to develop effective content and campaigns.

Specific Roles and Responsibilities

  • Produce clear and compelling social content including custom captions, simple graphics, photography, videos, and ads, in support of RMI’s diverse programmatic work and donor cultivation that adheres to our social media strategy and brand messaging. Content would be published across LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and any future channels.
  • Utilize a content calendar and strategic framework to work with strategic communication marketers, thought leaders, design, editorial, and web teams to populate, prepare content, and schedule to social media channels.  
  • Develop and implement communications strategies and deliverables for programmatic outcomes in the Islands, Africa, and Southeast Asia in collaboration with marketing colleagues and program experts.
  • Collaborate with the media relations, content, edit, and design teams to rapidly develop social content responding to breaking climate or energy news stories. 
  • Support communications projects from inception to completion, collaborating with program experts as well as the marketing, design, editorial, and media relations teams to create multimedia social content and optimize social media channels to grow audiences and drive brand awareness and traffic for RMI. 
  • In partnership with program thought leaders, organize, research, and write or ghost-write op-eds, blogs, statements, social posts, and other forms of content. 
  • Build media lists for the overall team and specific projects; draft press releases and pitches for reporters.
  • Assist media relations team in tracking and engaging with influential energy and climate journalists via social media to support ongoing outreach efforts, including the development of content that will grab the attention of target energy and climate media. 
  • Monitor and respond promptly to community interactions and mention the importance to RMI Global South across the digital space. Where relevant, report these trends to relevant parties, including program marketers, program experts, media team, and crisis comms Team. Assist in response strategy: recommend, draft copy, and respond to comments and/or mentions. 
  • Work with the analytics team to review and report on digital analytics, including social listening data, to quantify and qualify effectiveness of digital content and campaigns.  
  • From time to time, assist with creating, reviewing, and scheduling social content for other RMI programs.
  • Support the social media manager and strategic communications senior manager, Global South, as needed. 



Minimum Qualifications 

  • One or more years overall experience in communications, social media, public relations, marketing, and/or journalism. Internship, academic, volunteer, and nonprofit experience can count, too.
  • Excellent initiative, follow-through, and project management skills 
  • Fluency in social media landscape, including channels, best practices, and audiences.
  • Strong writing, editing, and verbal communications skills, including communicating at different levels of depth (more in-depth for industry audiences; simplified for lay audiences) 
  • Passion for storytelling and messaging around complex issues
  • Experience working on energy/climate policy, in journalism or non-profit comms is a plus
  • Experience with social media tools, particularly Sprout Social, to post, track, and for analytics.  
  • Strong digital media editing skills, including photo, video, and design, e.g.Canva, Adobe.
  • A strong team player with excellent collaborative skills with staff and counterparts at all organizational levels and with external partners.
  • Intellectually curious, meticulous, and able to multitask and prioritize.

Location

We are a remote-ready company with team members around the globe. Our beautiful and welcoming offices are available for meetings or focused work, whether you are traveling through or living nearby. Our US offices are in New York City; Washington DC; Oakland, California; and in Boulder and Basalt, Colorado. This role can be located from anywhere in the continental United States. RMI also works in China, India, Nigeria, the Pacific Islands, Carribean, and South-east Asia.

We provide you with the essential IT equipment plus a one-time home technology payment and a monthly work from home/commuter allowance to ensure you have a comfortable home office set up and necessary supplies.

We love seeing each other in person! We occasionally gather for shared time together like retreats and learning experiences. Be ready to travel for occasional in-person meetings (and of course, we cover travel costs). Some roles may require more travel, which will be discussed during the hiring process.

Compensation

RMI compensates based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. Typically, new Program Communications Specialists join at the minimum to mid salary range of $56,980 - $70,228. You would be eligible for an additional 5% bonus target!
