FLSA: Exempt Grade: 204 Salary: $ 42,000 - $ 44,000

General Summary

The Coordinator for Prison Ministry serves as a strategic partner to the Director of Prison Ministry in the coordination of awareness, promotion, growing volunteers and training, ministry fundraising, and program administration.

Our mission is to serve the men on death row and confinement as well as those whom the criminal justice system has determined belong in prison, without judging their guilt or innocence, but who wish to practice their faith. We also provide Liturgy of the word and Holy Communion services to groups of inmates, typically in a prison chapel or library, with lay ministers and clergy. We arrange Mass and reconciliation from a priest who is cleared to enter a Department of Corrections (DOC) facility or one of our county jails on regularly scheduled days. Priests or deacons are also available for pastoral visits or spiritual direction for death row, confinement, and level 7 maximum security prison inmates or those awaiting trial in our jails.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • In partnership with the Director, plans, designs, implements, coordinates, and manages a comprehensive strategic plan that describes the mission, as well as goals and objectives for the Office of Prison Ministry consistent with the bishop's vision focused on evangelization.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Prison Ministry, develops a program plan to establish prison ministry advocates at parishes and provides the tools to promote the ministry, and recruit and train volunteers.
  • Curates online resources to provide readymade outlets for parishes to use such as video series, links, prayer guides, social media, FAQ guides, etc.
  • Serves as department communication specialist and team builder with parishes and volunteers. These parish teams will adopt a prison or jail to provide consistent support including religious formation and services, letter writers and campaigns, support basic human needs of inmates, and support families of inmates, victims, and families of victims.
  • In collaboration with the Director and volunteers, explore the creation of Catholic halfway houses in our diocese.
  • Assists pastors with the clearance process for them to visit and minister to inmates in the correctional institutions.
  • Manages the logistical aspects of the ministry program including, but not limited to, coordinating meetings, setup, speaker logistics, and event organizing and planning; including retreats, conferences, and training workshops.
  • Serves on, and provides support to the ministry's development committee, leading the coordination of volunteers and creating fundraisers to financially support the ministry.
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate and organized ministry records and files; develops and submits for approval policies, forms, procedures, compliance, training material, promotional brochures, and professional and attractive correspondences for the Director.
  • Assists with the department budget and stays within the fiscal year budget.
  • Maintains confidentiality of correspondence, conversations, and materials processed in/through the department and its component offices/departments/diocesan entities.
  • Maintains the Prison Ministry webpage and intranet
  • May be responsible for presenting at workshops or parish events to promote Prison Ministry.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.


Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Must possess the ability to respect, promote, accommodate, and not be in conflict with the mission, moral and social teachings, doctrines, and laws of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • High school degree or equivalent. College degree preferred, major/minor in theology or religion.
  • Must possess excellent administrative skills including but not limited to organizational and time management, with project management skills.
  • Must consistently demonstrate a positive, friendly, respectful, and caring attitude with colleagues, the public, and all one serves in word and deed; projecting a welcoming atmosphere to all who interact with the office.
  • Demonstrates the ability to prioritize and organize work effectively and handle multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Must be able to interact with clergy and lay persons in a professional and pastoral manner.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Must be proficient in English grammar with excellent research, interpretive, writing, proofreading, and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including the use of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and database management are required.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) is preferred, but not required.
  • Honors, respects, and cares for all people; displays cultural diversity awareness and sensitivity.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must successfully pass the required criminal background check prior to employment and sustain this clearance.
