GP with Special Interest in Non-Specific Symptoms Pathway

University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is looking to appoint a GP to work in the Non-Specific Symptom Pathway (NSSP). The post holder will become part of a new GP Led multidisciplinary team made up of a clinical nurse specialist, patient navigator and GP clinical lead, based within Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC). NSSP aims to appropriately investigate and manage patients in whom there is a concern about cancer. These patients typically present with “vague symptoms” and do not meet criteria for existing suspected cancer pathways, but their symptoms require either prompt confirmation of cancer or exclusion with an understanding of the alternative diagnosis and a management plan agreed going forward. The majority of patient contact will be remote with face-to-face assessment being decided on an individual basis.

The team will be supported by Dr Anna O’Brien Speciality Lead in Medicine for Older People based at NBT, who will attend the regular NSSP multidisciplinary meeting. Dr O’Brien undertakes a weekly clinic at Cossham Hospital where our patients with unexplained symptoms, after cancer has been excluded, can be referred to help achieve a diagnosis and plan to help the GP support the patient going forward.

This post will suit an individual who is comfortable with working independently, is able to organise their workload effectively and is a good and effective communicator to patients, relatives and clinical colleagues. The GP will be able to support newly appointed colleagues as they develop in their roles and can demonstrate leadership in their role.

This role is a 2 sessions/PA a week, permanent contract. The preferred work pattern will be discussed at interview and agreed with the successful candidate.
