Our Client an innovative Lloyd’s Syndicate, is looking to hire Senior Underwriters with strong technical underwriting skills in any of the following product lines: property, casualty, professional indemnity, cyber, or financial lines/management liability.

The ideal candidate has the technical experience across various sectors and is a team player who is excited to work in a start-up, fast-paced environment.


Key Responsibilities:


- Supported by the product line leaders, develop and execute a strategy to grow the domestic Canadian Service Company portfolio across stand-alone and package product lines.

- Utilize technical and subject matter expertise when underwriting submissions to ensure appropriate risk review and pricing strategies are applied.

- Grow and maintain a profitable portfolio of business as defined by the business strategy.

- Develop and expand relationships with retail brokerages and individual brokers across Canada.

- Mentor and coach underwriting assistants and junior underwriters.


Senior Casualty Underwriter


Your responsibilities will include:

- Price a profitable book of Casualty risks appropriate to the business, based on underwriting, financial, and competitive analysis and in line with company guidelines.

- Effectively underwrite commercial liability primary and excess and umbrella liability risks with a focus on mid-market, upper mid-market, risk-managed, or specialty risks across multiple segments and classes.

- Ability to appropriately evaluate risks, determine terms, establish available capacity, and determine pricing utilizing company pricing tools and industry/geographic knowledge.

- Operate within underwriting authority to ensure compliance with internal underwriting guidelines, protocols, policies, and procedures.

- Underwrite to established thresholds relating to gross premium, net premium, new business, renewal retention, inflation uplift, rate uplift, and profitability targets for the portfolio.

- Monitor profitability of assigned clients and brokers, developing strategies or action plans to propose corrective actions as needed.

- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of pricing models, tools, and other risk evaluation models.

- Support business strategies to effectively achieve profit and growth objectives through sound underwriting and responsible marketing.

- Respond to underwriting and marketing strategies and standards by executing a marketing plan that reflects local market conditions and, at the same time, meets growth and profit goals.

- Support the development of bespoke Our Client product wordings, declaration pages, and schedules.

- Lead internal initiatives related to the growth of the Canadian portfolio.

- Set up or review and approve policy forms for all new and renewal policies according to binding terms for policy issuance by underwriting assistants.

- Produce new business through the development and engagement with retail brokers on a national basis.

- Provide technical training and other learning and development opportunities.


Required Skills/Competencies:


- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the Canadian commercial property and overall Property & Casualty insurance market.

- 8 years of property underwriting experience.

- Demonstrated analytical and risk underwriting skills that apply directly to selection, pricing, account handling, and book management, including industry trends, legal, regulatory, and jurisdictional issues.

- Experience with policy wording development.

- Excellent written and oral communication skills.

- Comfortable with using technology including Excel, PowerPoint, and internal underwriting, pricing, and policy management systems.

- Ability to build strong relationships with brokers and internal colleagues.

- High degree of drive, self-motivation, continuing development, and proven ability to work independently.

- Strong analytical, negotiating, and investigative competencies.

- Strong collaboration and team-building skills.

- High degree of flexibility and adaptability to changing environment and situations.

- Established broker relationships across Canada are highly desired.

- CIP/FCIP/CRM designation or progression towards would be an asset.
