Minimum Education/Training/Experience
Master’s Degree in Music (Vocal Performance, Music Education, and/or Conducting Major), or Master’s with 18 hours of Music; prior teaching experience.
Preferred Education/Training/Experience
Doctorate in Music or Music preferred. Performance and conducting experience desired.
Minimum Knowledge & Skills
Principles and practices of teaching.
Vocal coaching and training techniques.
Detailed knowledge of material being taught in the specific course and program area.
Student engagement techniques.
Record keeping procedures.
Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with students, coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Ability to teach vocal ensembles such as A Capella, Chorale.
Able to instruct/coach all vocal ranges and styles.
Skills in effective Sight Singing and Ear Training methods.
Knowledge needed to teach other courses as assigned such as American Music, Music Appreciation, Music Literature, Music Theory.
Preferred Knowledge & Skills
Familiarity with hybrid and/or online course delivery.
Working piano proficiency.
Prior attendance and participation in conferences and activities involving students and educators such as GCIC , NATS , TMEA , etc.
Record of hosting and/or leading master classes.
Success with vocal majors auditioning, entering competitions, teaching in communities, embarking on careers as public performers.
Comfort with lifelong learners and groups containing mixed ages and abilities.
Experience organizing and leading tours from local area to international travel.
Demonstrable history of forming or supporting new initiatives to attract public and student interest such as A Capella, Madrigal, Mariachi, Musical Theatre.
Established marketing and publicity skills including social media activity.
Job Duties
Comply with all college policies and safety policies to ensure a positive learning environment for student instruction and to support the activities of the college and to attend meetings and training as required.
Direct minimum of two concerts per ensemble each semester.
Organize and present vocal music at special events such as commencement, holiday celebrations, memorial observations.
Teach vocal ensembles such as A Capella, Chorale; teach Applied Music to both majors and non-majors; instruct/coach all vocal ranges and styles; teach Sight Singing and Ear Training classes; other courses as assigned such as American Music, Music Appreciation, Music Literature, Music Theory.
Hold and/or participate in studio classes allowing students to try out performing prior to juries and recitals.
Attend and provide student critiques in juries for all Applied Music students in the department.
Guide students in selecting repertoire for recitals and prepare them for successful performances.
Attend and arrange for audio and video recordings of recitals.
Maintain regular visibility in the community as performer and/or conductor.
Supervise students at performance events.
Participate in departmental recruitment activities as needed.
Maintain professional credentials and contacts outside of COM Fine Arts.
Maintain a minimum of 7.5 scheduled office hours per week to be available for students.
Develop multiple articulation agreements through contacts especially with area universities.
