Appalachia HealthCorps is focused exclusively on demonstrating the power of peers. Our long-term goal is to make peers sustainable and widely accessible. We place AmeriCorps peers, both Community Health Workers (CHWs) and Peer Recovery Supporters (PRSs), with partners to help individuals overcome barriers to better health. CHWs will visit assigned patients weekly and work with a clinical care team to help patients manage their chronic conditions better. PRSs will be placed at sites to help individuals get into treatment or help them sustain long-term recovery by connecting them to needed services. Our AmeriCorps members get enormous satisfaction from the impact they have on the lives of the people we serve. It is a life-changing experience!

Member Duties : AmeriCorps members will support individuals who face barriers to living a better life. Peer Recovery Supporters will help connect individuals in early recovery to employment, housing, or other needed services. They will also help do outreach to areas of drug use to connect individuals to treatment. Community Health Workers will visit assigned patients on a weekly basis and report to a clinical care team. They will help their patients understand their medication, access needed services, and help guide them towards healthier habits. The power of peers is in the relationship they form with their patients. They won’t care what you know until they know that you care.
