Student Engagement Manager Tulane Hillel Role Overview

The Opportunity: Tulane Hillel is a vibrant non-profit community center that fosters leadership and community engagement for all Tulane students. It is hard to put into words, best when felt, but this place has a “vibe” that makes Tulane Hillel a uniquely memorable and meaningful place to work. Students describe Tulane Hillel as radically inclusive, welcoming, and relevant, and our organization engages an unusually broad spectrum of young people, both Jewish and not. Our team is hard-working, driven by our students, and joyful.

Role Overview: The Student Engagement Manager is first and foremost about building and maintaining relationships with our students, providing individualized support and guidance, and ensuring we fulfill our commitments to the students we serve. This role, like the other members of our engagement team, will have a portfolio of students they work with directly, but it is also responsible for thinking about and engaging the entire student community. It also serves as a support role to our Assistant Director, providing administrative and logistics capacity, advising on student-facing issues, and generally helping to guide the engagement team. Student Engagement Manager is also an essential presence at most of our programs, many of which occur in the evenings, Friday nights, and Sundays.

To Apply: The priority deadline for this role is June 24th. After this deadline, we will continue to receive applications on a rolling basis but may close the application at any time, so we encourage people to apply as close to this date as possible.

What You’ll Do

Hillel plays an extraordinary role at Tulane in building a Jewish community that is open, accessible, and diverse. The Student Engagement Manager is involved in all aspects of community activities, from developing engagement strategies to running large-scale event logistics. The role also consists of cultivating genuine yet professional relationships with students and guiding them through college life.

  • Act as the lead liaison between students and the Tulane Hillel team, thoughtfully finding ways to spend time with students, building trusting relationships, connecting students with resources, and acting as a support system throughout their college experience. Sometimes, this involves supporting students with difficult life situations and connecting them to campus resources.
  • Participate in our Engagement Team, which is led by the Assistant Director, to create and lead student outreach/recruitment programming.
  • Mentor students participating in the Tulane Jewish Leaders program to create diverse programs and initiatives to engage their peers and build community on campus.
    • Initiatives have included a recurring farmer’s market, movie viewings and discussions, basketball tournaments for charity, issue discussion groups, an art show, challah baking and sales for charity, an Open Mic night, and more.
  • Serve as administrative support to the Assistant Director, organizing team-wide systems and processes, acting as a thought partner, and providing additional capacity as needed.
What You’ve Accomplished

  • Experience building trusting yet professional relationships, ideally with young adults; experience formally mentoring or supporting young people preferred (e.g., summer camp counselor, school mentorship, teaching, counseling, etc.).
  • Approximately 1-3 years of professional working experience
  • Proficiency in Google Suite or Microsoft Suite and the ability to quickly learn new technology platforms (e.g., databases)
  • Marketing/social media experience (preferred)
  • Bachelor’s Degree (preferred

What You’ll Bring to the Job

  • Relationship building and thoughtful, empathetic, strategic thinking - You get energy from meeting people and would enjoy working with a wide variety of students. You bring enthusiasm, energy, and joy to programs you’re leading and feel comfortable in front of groups, particularly students. The ability to listen and then think strategically and diplomatically about how to handle things is key!
  • A collaborative approach to work - You are a life-long learner who solicits and is open to feedback, believes you always have something new to learn or grow in and enjoys working with a team to accomplish a goal. Ideas for programming come primarily from students rather than staff. We are looking for someone committed to mentoring individual student leaders and groups of students to make outstanding programs happen.
  • Strong project management and organization. At any given moment, you could be working with 3-10 programs, all involving organizing committees of 2-5 students. We are looking for someone who is adept with and enjoys juggling lots of details, logistics, and personalities simultaneously. It is refreshing and fun, but it definitely calls for someone comfortable with multi-tasking and with strong organizational skills.
  • Dedicated to inclusivity. We are a very open tent, Hillel and we need someone equally dedicated to our mission and commitment to inclusion. We focus on bringing in Jewish students who might not usually opt to be involved in a religious organization on campus, in addition to students who come to Tulane eager to participate in Jewish Life on campus. Someone in this role doesn’t need to be Jewish, but you need fluency in Jewish holidays, customs, and values and share an enthusiastic curiosity to learn more.
  • Work hours and physical abilities for events - While most of this role takes place during traditional work hours, it does require someone who can commit to evening and weekend events as needed (sometimes 2 days per week). The role also takes a good deal of physical lifting for event set-up and clean-up, requiring someone to be able to lift at least 35 pounds regularly. Access to a car and driver's license is optional but preferred.

What You’ll Receive

  • Competitive salary in the non-profit marketplace. The salary range for this role is $46,000-$54,000 annually. Starting salary will be determined based on someone’s previous experience and equity amongst our team.
  • A comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, life insurance, Long Term Disability (LTD), and Flexible Spending Plan. Tulane Hillel covers 80% to 100% of individual employee health insurance premiums.
  • After completing your second year in the role, Tulane Hillel automatically contributes 5% to your retirement plan.
  • Generous vacation, sick time, Jewish holidays, and university breaks.
  • Access to professional development opportunities to support your growth.
  • Workspace in a beautiful building with a restaurant, complimentary coffee/tea, and bubble waters
    • COVID-19 Policies and Safety: Tulane Hillel follows Tulane University Covid-19 mandatory vaccination policy for all staff members.
