About The Role

We're looking for an Underwriter I or II, Personal Lines, to join our growing dynamic team!

As an Underwriter in Personal Lines-Classic Team, your work will have a big impact in processing and underwriting moderately complex files within binding authority limit involving personal automobile, property and/or casualty policies in order to contribute to a profitable portfolio of business. You will also develop business opportunities through building and maintaining strong internal/external business partner relationships, as well as acting as a technical resource of underwriting knowledge for both colleagues and internal/external business partners.

This 18-month secondment/contract position is a hybrid role requiring minimum of 2 days per week in our Century-Mississauga office.

What You'll Do Here

  • Assess and evaluate insurance policy risks.
  • Process, underwrite and authorize the acceptance of new business, renewals, cancellations and endorsements to develop and retain profitable business.
  • Ensure authorized limits are in accordance with established company guidelines, applicable laws and regulations as well as apply standard rates and premiums in underwriting quotes.
  • Review supporting claims reports and legal background.
  • Implement and exercise learned techniques including qualifying a business opportunity, prepare for contact, contact internal/external business partners, develop proposals, promote proposals, gain commitment and close the agreement.
  • May provide technical advice, recommendations, and mentoring to Underwriting Assistants.
  • May provide training and information sessions.
  • Answering inquiries and making recommendations to agents through verbal and written correspondence.
  • Develop and manage relationships with internal/external business partners: participate in courtesy visits, insurance industry and marketing events, promote products and services, solicit new business and identify opportunities for profitable growth.
  • Write summaries regarding overall results.

What You Bring To The Table

  • Post secondary education [college/university degree] preferred or any combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum 1 year experience in property & casualty insurance preferred
  • Exposure to working in the personal automobile, property and/or casualty sectors is a strong asset
  • Insurance Professional (CIP) designation completed or in progress
  • Must demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and critical thinking
  • Must be able to interpret policy wording and legal documents
  • Excellent sales and customer retention skills
  • Proficient computer and keyboarding skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and relationship building abilities
  • Willing to travel to broker's offices as required, in possession of a valid driver's license and a good driving record
  • Demonstrated efficiency and strong time-management skills to meet competing productivity
  • No Canadian work experience required however must be eligible to work in Canada.
