In accordance with the mission, philosophy, goals and objectives of Seton Medical Center / Seton Coastside, the Director of Pharmacy Services is legally, financially, and professionally responsible for the overall management of the pharmacy service departments.

Essential Duties

1 Develop, implement, maintain and refine Pharmacy systems and services which promote safe drug use.

2 Develop, implement, maintain, and refine systems which will promote pharmaceutical care; the direct, responsible provision of medication related care for the purpose of achieving definite outcomes that improve a patient’s quality of life.

3 Promote, develop, and maintain good medical staff and Pharmacy Department relationships and support.

4 Promote, develop, and maintain good nursing staff and Pharmacy Department relationship for the benefit of each profession, and especially the patient.

5 Ensure a positive working environment by providing for appropriate development, motivation and supervision of the Pharmacy's staff including development of individual performance plans and annual assessment of individual performance levels against those plans.

6 Ensure the prudent utilization of human and material resources while maintaining both safety and quality standards by participating in the preparation of capital, operational, and labor budgets for the department and monitoring utilization of resources.

7 Ensure the compliance of the Department with all applicable external agency regulations; such as the Joint Commission, State licensing agencies, State Board of Pharmacy and the pertinent collective bargaining agreements by conducting periodic audits and integrating the various regulations into the operation of the Department.

8 Establishes and maintains strict control and accountability for all medications stored in the hospital and dispensed or administered to patients

9 Assumes responsibility for the development and implementation of policies and procedures that support the services provided.

10 Assumes responsibility for ensuring adequate and competent staff through ongoing performance feedback, timely annual review of performance, and appropriate disciplinary action within Hospital policies and procedures.

11 Is committed to developing, monitoring, and evaluating quality through a formalized process.

Evaluates staff development and educational needs and identifies appropriate resources as necessary.

12 Identifies needed resources and makes those needs known to the organization.

13 Provides orientation and in-service training for all staff.

14 Ensures a safe work environment for staff.

15 Actively participates in interdisciplinary committees, meetings, and functions as required

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.

REASONING ABILITY Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

WORK ENVIRONMENT The duties of this job include possible exposure to gases and fumes, blood and body fluids, and hazardous chemicals; the employee must understand and demonstrate the ability to take protective actions, following established guidelines. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

QUALIFICATIONS The incumbent must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below are representative of necessary knowledge, skill, and ability. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable people with disabilities to perform essential functions.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

B.S. Pharmacy; or M.S. Pharmacy, or Pharm. D.

Minimum of 10 years in institutional pharmacy practice.

Minimum of 5 years in managerial or supervisory position in institutional pharmacy practice.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION

Current California Pharmacist License.
