This position is a full-time (12-month) position with annual renewals. The Julian Samora Research Institute (JSRI) Director reports to the Vice Provost for University Outreach and Engagement (UOE). MSU is looking for a visionary scholar to co-create and direct the next future of the Julian Samora Research Institute (JSRI). The Director will support and advance the mission of JSRI and align with the UOE and Michigan State University strategic plans (MSU 2030 and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion).


JSRI is the premier Latino research institute in Michigan and the Midwest. It has a history of engaged research with Latino communities, farmworkers and their families, farmers, and youth. JSRI's mission is to generate, disseminate, and apply knowledge to serve the needs of Latino communities in the Midwest and across the nation, emphasizing health disparities, education, entrepreneurship, and service delivery systems gaps. 


Position Responsibilities 

·      Serve as the chief administrative officer of JSRI.  

·      Engage and create equitable, collaborative partnerships with Latino communities across Michigan. 

·      Engage in fundraising, development activities, and external relations. 

·      Provide leadership for daily operations, staff management and joint faculty appointments. Nurture an environment of respect, trust, and collaboration. 

·      Engage in scholarship that advances the mission of JSRI. 

·      Facilitate and expand an ongoing program of multidisciplinary community-engaged research on Latinos in Michigan, the Midwest, and the United States. 

·      Mentoring new and emerging Latinx scholars (graduate students, postdocs, tenure track faculty, and others) to foster future generations.  

·      Active engagement and development of partnerships with units such as Chicano and Latino Studies (CLS) and other academic units across the University. 

·      Actively contribute to developing new resources, programs, and activities. 

·      Actively contribute to MSU’s Office of Outreach and Engagement mission. 

·      Working collaboratively with others on gift, grant and endowment activities. 

·      Disseminate and translate findings in peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations, and community settings. 

·      Contribute to the leadership and support of the MSU UOE strategic plan. 

·      Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in all research activities.  

·      Act when institutional values are undermined, threatened, or violated. 

 

Minimum Experience and Requirements 

·      A Ph.D. in Agriculture, Education, Health Sciences, Humanities, Natural Resources, Social Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Chicano and Latino Studies, or related fields. 

·      A record of scholarly work as demonstrated in publications, presentations, or other related products. 

·      Proven record of federal, state or privately funded research. 

·      Excellent ability to communicate verbally and in writing in both English and Spanish is preferred. 

·      Experience working with diverse Latino communities; demonstrated leadership in promoting and supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion.  

 

Preferred Qualifications 

·      Knowledge of and experience working with Latinx populations in Michigan or the United States Midwestern areas.  

·      A record of successful program management, employee supervision, and leadership.
