Summary: The Assistant Food Program Coordinator is responsible for assisting the food coordinator in the day-to-day operations of all of the grocery center programs. Individual accountabilities and work volume will be established through the development of annual Success Objectives, within the framework outlined below.

Essential Functions

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists Food Coordinators in the day-to-day tasks of operating grocery centers on service days
  • Stocks grocery center commodities
  • Presents menu options to participants.
  • Fulfills orders.
  • Distributes orders.
  • Documents services in databases
  • Assists Food Coordinator with receiving and storing of grocery center commodities weekly
  • Examines products for safety and signs of damage.
  • Counts and reports items received.
  • Stores items expeditiously and in the appropriate locations that are in alignment with federal, state and local food safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Organizes inventory following “first in first out” protocols.
  • Assists Food Coordinators in conducting monthly inventory of grocery center commodities
  • Counts products.
  • Examines products for safety and damages and reports findings to Food Coordinator.
  • Documents inventory on tracking tools.
  • Reports shortages or overages of commodities to Food Coordinator for planning and purchasing needs.
  • Performs the day-to-day operations of the grocery center in the temporary absence of the food coordinator.
  • Transports grocery center commodities, donations, supplies and program files to other program sites as needed.
  • Enters data into databases or tracking documents as needed.
  • Collaborates with Manager of food and nutrition to create and implement quarterly or ongoing projects.
  • Participates in regular program coordination meetings and other staff meetings and trainings, as indicated.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisory personnel

Education And Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must obtain (within 6 months) and maintain Food Protection Manger Certification and License.
  • Minimum one year experience working in social services or related field.
  • Bilingual Spanish speaking preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (K/S/A)

  • Ability to lift packaging up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to frequently squat and bend throughout the day.
  • Ability to stand for periods lasting longer the 1 hour.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize universal and systematic methods to organize, maintain and store files and documents.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Ability and comfortability working with people of varying socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills. Strong networker, convener, relationship builder and communicator with experience collaborating with diverse work teams and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information possessing skills to handle situations in a professional and diplomatic manner.
  • A high degree of collaboration and emotional intelligence, self-motivation, and analytical ability.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other software routinely used by Heartland Alliance Health.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work independently and remain self-motivated with minimal direct supervision.
  • Strategic thought partnership and consultancy skills.

  • Program sites are located throughout the Chicago area, including the West, North and South sides of Chicago, employees may be required to report to any one of our locations on a temporary or permanent basis.
