The role

  • Provide strategic leadership for a range of statutory children’s social care services, ensuring that safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is paramount.


  • Responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of an annual business plan by ensuring effective performance management, including identification of risk and capacity issues across the held portfolio of services.


  • Take lead responsibility for the development and implementation of specific projects within Children’s Social Care in accordance with the Directorate’s and Council’s strategic priorities and manage all communication and risk issues.


  • To ensure that the corporate parenting principles are embedded and the statutory responsibilities to children in care are met across children’s social care.
  • Act as the senior representative on the regional adoption agency’s Operational Board providing support and challenge to drive continuous improvement and ensure that sufficiency of adopters is achieved.
  • To take a lead role in the Corporate Parenting Board by working with the Lead Member for Children’s Social Care, ensuring that the work programme is reflective of the key issues and needs of children and young people in care.
  • To work with colleagues to ensure that the Council’s sufficiency duty is met, and children and young people experience safe and stable placements and accommodation.
  • Act as Responsible Individual for Council run children’s homes and the Fostering Service and be accountable and meet the Ofsted requirements of this role.
