The Electrical Engineer is a member of a multi-discipline engineering team tasked with executing capital and expense projects, major maintenance activities, and supporting the Operations and Maintenance departments.


Reporting to the Station Manager, the Electrical Engineer is responsible for all aspects of project development, design, implementation, and closure in compliance with the Heartland PPMP and MOC processes. The Electrical Engineer will also provide consistent, comprehensive, and professional support to the station operations and maintenance departments in areas such as troubleshooting, root cause analysis, maintenance practices, outage planning & execution, operating guidelines, and engineering standards development and implementation.


What you’ll be doing:

  • Condition monitoring of generators, transformers, and BOP electrical equipment
  • Lifecycle management of station electrical equipment including the development and maintenance of a strategy document for critical equipment
  • Assist in lifecycle management of station control systems and instrumentation including the development and maintenance of a strategy document for critical equipment
  • Development of contingency plans for critical equipment
  • Leading major maintenance, inspections, and testing of major electrical equipment
  • Program development and ownership of applicable Alberta Reliability Standards
  • Leading the site commodity metering process
  • Project management of major Electrical projects
  • Electrical design and drawing updates
  • Management of critical engineering files and documentation
  • Providing technical support and mentorship to maintenance personnel
  • Providing support to other HGL operational units and facilities as required


What you must have:

  • Electrical Engineering degree from a recognized post-secondary institution and registered as a Professional
  • Engineer in good standing with APEGA, or other provincial Professional Engineering Regulatory Association and qualifies for inter-provincial mobility
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant industry experience in thermal/gas fired power generation, or a comparable industry. Consideration will be given to individuals with more extensive applicable experience
  • Experience with power station operations, maintenance, development, construction, and commissioning is an asset
  • Experience with Generators, Electrical Protection systems, Protection Relays, Switchgear/MCCs, Power System Analysis, Turbine Control Systems, DCS, PLCs, SCADA
  • Self-starter who can work independently and is motivated to learn and develop
  • Critical thinker with strong problem-solving skills
  • Effective team player with strong interpersonal skills who leads by example
  • Seeks feedback from other team members and clients to improve quality of deliverables; committed to building on existing and developing new expertise
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiar with the Canadian Electrical Code
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and cloud-based software
  • Project management training and experience is an asset
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license


Where you’ll be working:

This position is located at our Muskeg River Cogeneration Facility in Fort McMurray, Alberta, with the option to utilize a fly in fly out offering from Edmonton or Calgary.
