SAFE Alliance seeks a Forensic Nurse for the Community Services Program in the Sexual Assault Services department. The Forensic Nurse's role is both medical and forensic: to detect and treat injury and disease and to collect evidence. The Forensic Nurse is expected to follow protocols established by the medical director and/or program management and to exercise professional judgment in utilizing the nursing process to assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.

We are dedicated to ending violence through prevention, advocacy, and comprehensive services for individuals, families, and communities that have been affected by abuse.

In the past two years, our community outreach and education has provided over 400 trainings to over 7,000 community members. Our various housing and shelter programs have provided over 46,000 nights/days of care and served over 3,000 youth and adults directly affected by abuse. We have provided over 10,000 callers/chats/texts, walk-in advocacy and crisis interventions or face-to-face emotional support through our 24/7 confidential SAFEline.

Position Details

We are looking for two (2) people to work on a full-time, exempt basis for an annual salary of $79,500 to $87,500 dependent upon experience and an additional annual language differential of $3,600 for those who are English/Spanish bilingual. The work location will be at our Grove Blvd. Campus in the East Austin area until our relocation to Rathgeber Village Campus in the Mueller area. This position will include some travel with no ability for remote/hybrid work. This position currently requires you to participate in an On-Call schedule/rotation that includes mandatory night and weekend call-ins.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered nurse in the state of Texas or compact licensure is required.
  • Two or more years of experience working as a registered nurse is required.
  • Completion of adult and adolescent sexual assault nurse examiner training and Texas Office of the Attorney General Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner certification requirements.
  • Certification through Texas Office of the Attorney General at completion of training. IAFN certification is optional and encouraged.
  • Membership in International Association of Forensic Nurses within 6 months of hire.
  • Current BLS certification is required.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish preferred.
  • Vaccination for
  • Measles, mumps, rubella x2, or positive titer
  • Varicella x2, positive titer, or medically documented history of having the disease
  • Current seasonal flu vaccine or a signed declination
  • Hepatitis B x3, positive titer, or a signed declination
  • Tdap vaccination or a signed declination
  • COVID vaccination preferred
  • Ability to learn quickly and multi-task and prioritize in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Sensitive to various ethnic, social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Impeccable integrity and judgment; works cooperatively with external partners and constituencies.
  • Ability and desire to learn the services of the organization, to think strategically and operate tactically.
  • Thorough understanding of the neurobiology of trauma.
  • Ability to work under conditions that include approximately ten hours or more per week inside with significant computer work required.
  • Work may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays with night and weekend call ins being mandatory for this position.
  • Regular travel to hospitals and community agencies is required.
  • Ability to work in positions (approximated) include sitting 15%, standing 35%, walking 50%. The physical requirements include lifting/carrying, pushing/pulling, stooping/kneeling/bending, balance, depth perception, hearing acuity, repetitive arm/hand movements, eye/hand/foot coordination, manual dexterity, finger dexterity, color vision, far and near vision acuity.
  • Characterized as primarily non-sedentary work requiring exertion up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Ability to lift and pull with assistance (mechanical or coworker) the weight of an average patient.
  • Mental and emotional requirements include appropriate stress management, handling multiple priorities, making decisions under pressure, and management of anger/fear/hostility/violence of others.
  • Hazards include exposure to communicable diseases and blood borne pathogen exposure.
  • Have a valid, State of Texas Driver's License (If in possession of an out-of-state license, obtain a State of Texas Driver's License within 90 days of beginning employment.) AND at least three (3) consecutive years of driving experience OR one (1) year of driving experience if over 27 years of age AND an acceptable driving record that covers at least the last three years of driver history.
  • Pass all required criminal history background checks (including an FBI fingerprint check if applicable), as well as a pre-employment drug screen and TB test, if applicable.
