The Financial Navigator assesses the financial needs of patients by determining the patient balance due on patient accounts, working with patients or their representatives to identify financial resources and facilitate connecting patients to those resources.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Evaluates and explains the patients insurance and/or other resources in terms they understand to provide patient-specific education on their insurance benefits and estimated out-of-pocket expenses for healthcare services.
Determine patient responsibility amounts and obtain payments in advance of the related procedure.
Serve as a Patient Advocate for patients when patients have difficulty navigating with their insurance company.
Completes a social and financial assessment and appropriately refers patients who have no insurance coverage or qualify for financial assistance to a medical eligibility agency for potential assistance through Federal, State, or local healthcare programs.
Serves as point of contact for patient billing questions and concerns; working directly with Patient Financial Services (PFS) staff to resolve all patient billing matters.
Job Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Social Work, Public Health, Public Administration, or other related field is required and/or relevant work experience in lieu of Bachelor’s Degree.
Work Experience
One (1) year of relative work experience in Healthcare and/or Medical Insurance industry required. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills along with a high customer service acumen.
Certification/License
HFMA certification preferred.
Mental/Physical Requirements
Considerable mental concentration on various projects and assignments. Standing, stooping, bending, walking, sitting, and lifting up to 35 lbs. Unpredictable environment with wide variations in the types of customers and acuity levels, varying conditions regarding temperature control and potential exposure to hazardous materials. Potential exposure to infectious disease. Frequent auditory distractions.
Working Conditions
No inherent accident or health hazards inherent in this position. Modern and well-lighted office area with access to his/her own desk, phone, computer and other necessary office supplies. No unusual working conditions.
